Transciption: | JOHN THOMAS NASH The funeral of Mr. John T. Nash, whose death Thursday week was reported in last week’s “Mercury,” took place Monday afternoon at the Newtown Road Cemetery from the deceased’s residence, Upland Villa, close by.
The obsequies were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Harford, pastor of the Congregational Chnrch. of which Mr. Nash had for lengthened period been one of the deacons; and it is somewhat remarkable that this church has of late lost quite a number of its most prominent members.
Mr. Nash had been in business a printer and bookseller in Northbrook Street for many years, and had been assisted bv his son. The latter, however, was called military service, and lost his life in France. This was a great, blow to his parents, as he was their only child, and very soon after his death, Mr. Nash developed a serious illness. underwent an acute operation the District Hospital, and appeared on the road to recovery, being able to get business occasionally. He suffered a somewhat sudden relapse, however, and passed away on Thursday, the age of 64 years.
Much sympathy is felt for the widow, who has sustained two such severe bereavements within a short period. The first portion of the burial service was conducted the residence, whence the coffin was conveyed to the graveside, where the Rev. J. W. Harford offered an eloquent prayer, and recited the committal sentences.
The mourners were: The Widow, Mrs. and Miss Nash (sisters), Mr. H. J. Midwinter, and Mr. and Mrs. of Brentford (brother-in-law and sister-in-law). Among those present were noticed: Alderman J. Rankin, Councillors F C. Hopson, T. H. Pratt, and A. Camp, the Rev. J. Neville, the Rev. A. Longstaff. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Goodman, Mrs. and the Misses Midwinter, Miss Dolton, Mrs. Nias. Miss Pratt, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bell. Mrs. B. Gould. Mrs. W. W. Penford, Mrs. Harford. Mrs. Salwav, the Misses Salway, Mrs. Ending. Mrs. A. T. Whitington, Messrs. J. Flint, J. Wyse, H. Hill, S. Walter, R. P. Elliott, E. Salway, T. H. Cullum, A.W. Neate, F. H. Stillman. J. S. Herbert, A. Attewell, F. Wright, C. Langton. R. Walker, E. Prismall, A. Smith. G. Dell, and the following members of the Rechabite Order (of which deceased had for many years been an honorary member): Messrs. C. G. Sainsbury. J. Steptoe, J. Edwards, and S. Dibley.
The coffin was of polished oak with brass plate, and on it were placed two floral tributes, one of them being from the pastor, deacons, and officials the Congregational Church “ in affectionate memory of a faithful colleague.”
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Penford and Son, of Northbrook Street.
