JOHN CHARLES JOYCE

THE LATE MR. J.C. JOYCE

Charlie Joyce, as he was familiarly called by his intimate friends, passed away at 12 Speen View Terrace, Russell-road, on Saturday 28th May. Born at Kintbury in the year 1842, he was at the age of 17 apprenticed to Mr. John Parker, blacksmith of Sparsholt, near Wantage. After serving his time he went to work for Mr. Joseph Partridge, near Stanford in the Vale, where he remained for 22 years, during which time he was a bell-ringer, also sexton of Sparsholt Church.

Subsequently he went into business for himself as village blacksmith, which he continued until he came to Newbury 26years ago, and was employed as shop-smith by the late Mr. Samuel Elliott at the Albert Works for 16 years, he was considered an expert at tool making. Later he acted as gardener to the Rev. A.H.D. Newbold, when residing at Auckland House, having always taken a great interest in gardening the whole of his life.

Mr. Newbold in a sympathetic letter to the family, spoke of him as “a real staunch friend”.

The funeral took place on Thursday, the first portion being taken at the Parish Church, the officiating clergyman being the Rector (Rev. L. R. Majendie and the Rev. A.H.D. Newbold (Vicar of Ardington) the latter reading the committal service at the graveside.

The mourners were Mr. E. and Mr. F. Joyce (sons), Miss Joyce and Mrs. F. Kingham (daughters), Mrs. F. Joyce (daughter-in-law), Mr. J. Joyce (nephew), Miss B. Joyce (grand-daughter, and Miss Shuff and Mr. Kingham. Also present at the church were the Misses Bunny, the Misses Adey, Nurse Rawlings and Mrs Stillman.

Wreaths were sent from his sorrowing widow and children; Bert,Alice, mother and Ethel, Eli and Jennie; his grandchildren Alice, Nellie, Emmie, and Ethel; Mrs new; Mrs shuff and Ethel.

The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings, the nameplate being inscribed "John Charles Joyce died 26 may 1917 aged 74 years".

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mrs Hart and Son, Newbury.
