THE LATE MR. HENRY ROGERS
The interment of the late Mr. Henry Rogers, of Hillsborough, Wash Common, took place at Newbury Cemetery yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, the Rev. J.W. Harford officiating. The remains conveyed on glass Washington car, were enclosed in a coffin of polished oak, with brass fittings and bore the inscription:- HENRY ROGERS Died May 13th, 1917 Aged 81.
The mourners were Mrs Rogers (widow), Mrs. Turner (daughter), Mr. W. Rogers(son), Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rogers (sons and daughters-in-law), Mr. Stanley Turner (grandson), Mr. H. Midwinter (brother-in-law), Mrs. H. Midwinter, Mrs. Smith, Miss J Midwinter, Mr. H.S. and Miss Salway; also present Mrs. Davies, Miss Walter, and several other friends.
Floral offerings, many of them very choice were from his loving wife, his loving daughter and husband, William and Bella, Annie and Sidney, Mr. Harry Rogers and Joan, Stanley and Kathleen, Mr. and Mrs H. Midwinter and family, Nellie, Janey, Emily, Katie and Sissi, Mrs. F.D. Bazett, M. and Mrs. C. W. Judd, employees at Fareham and Quilhampton Works, Lucy, etc.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Penford and son.
The deceased gentleman came to Newbury some 15 or 16 years ago from Salisbury. For several years he resided at Kingsdown on the Enborne-road, which he vacated for Hillsborough, a house which he had newly built. Though he had reached the advanced age of 81, he enjoyed good health, continuing to take rural walks, and to work in his garden, where he might have been seen on the Tuesday previous to the Sunday on which he passed away.

The “Congregational Magazine” for June states the interesting fact, in connection with the late Mr. Henry Rogers of Wash Common, who died on the 13th of last month, was his relationship to John Newton, his grandfather being a nephew of that celebrated divine and hymn writer. His father was a deacon of the Congregational Church for many years at Saffron Walden, where Mr. Rogers was born, and his uncle, Professor Rogers of Albany Church, London, and Theological Tutor at Spurgeon’s College. He had an interesting link too, with the late Dr. Dale. In his early years Dr Dale was assistant master at Mr. White’s School at Andover, and Mr. Rogers was a pupil in his class. Long years afterwards pupil and teacher met at the opening of the Congregational Church in Salisbury, a beautiful Gothic building in the erection of which he took much interest,
