Biographical Information

The articles below contain information about Jane Collins.

Jane Collins (1834 – 1917)

John Collins (1837 – 1927)

                                    Jane Collins (1834 – 1917)

John Collins was born in 1837 in Compton, the illegitimate son of Martha Collins. He was baptized on 19 March 1837 at St Nicholas in Compton. In the 1841 census he was recorded with his grandparents George and Elizabeth Collins along with his mother Martha and sister Sophia in Compton. John was still living in Compton when the 1851 census was taken along with his widowed grandmother Elizabeth, mother Martha, sister Sophia and other family members and was working as a farm labourer.

Jane (possibly Joan*) Reeves was born in 1834 in East Garston, the daughter of William and Lucy, nee Knapp, Reeves. She was baptized on 15 June 1834 at All Saints in East Garston. In the 1851 census Joan was living as a servant in Bartholomew Street in Newbury and her occupation was house servant.

John Collins married Joan Reeves on 13 October 1858 at St Nicholas in Compton. They were recorded living together in Compton in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses. John was an agricultural labourer in 1861 and a farm bailiff in 1871.

In the 1881 census John and Joan were living in Chieveley with John a farmer tending 15 acres.

Ten years later in the 1891 census John and Jane were living at Hollington Farm in East Woodhay with John working as a farmer. They were still in East Woodhay in 1901 with John a farmer, probably in the same farm although the farm name was not recorded although it appears to have been sited along Hollington Lane.

By the time of the 1911 census John and Jane were living at 1 Elm Cottages, Wash Water in Newbury and John was recorded as a retired farmer.

Jane died in April 1917 aged 82 while still living at Wash Water and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 April.

Four years later in the 1921 census John was living by himself at 10 Lower Raymond’s Almhouses in Newbury.

John died in February 1927 aged 90 still living at the Almhouses and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 February.
