Charlotte Carpenter
Charlotte Carpenter (1890 —1969)
Charlotte was born on 13 November 1890 in Greenham, the daughter of Alfred and Lucy, nee Smith, Brindley. She was recorded with her parents and brothers Charles aged 8 and Samuel aged 2 in Greenham in the 1891 census. His father Alfred was recorded as a coachman.
Her father Alfred died in February 1895 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 8 February 1895.
She attended St Johns school then on 1 March 1895 she joined St Nicolas Church of England school while living in Stroud Green, leaving in September 1902 on moving to Greenham. Charlotte's mother Lucy remarried in 1897 in Newbury to Francis William Taylor. In the 1901 census Charlotte was living with her mother Lucy Taylor with brothers Samul aged 13, Fred aged 8 and step sister Maud aged 3 at 9 Adey's Buildings in Stroud Green. Ten years later in the 1911 census she was still at the same address with her step father Francis, mother Lucy and their three children and she was recorded as a laundry machinist.
Charlotte married Francis Thomas Hill on 22 April 1916 at St Mary in Speenhamland. Charlotte was born on 13 November 1890 in Greenham. Francis was born on 11 October 1886 in Newbury, the son of Robert Henry and Alice Annie, nee Andrews, Hill. He had enlisted in the 17th Lancers on 21 August 1905. In the 1911 census he was recorded as a private in the Lancers at Edwards Barracks in Sialkot in India. He was discharged on 15 January 1916 after being wounded in action in WW1.
In the 1920 to 1922 electoral registers Francis and Charlotte were recorded at Leopold, Livingston Road in Newbury. In 1923 and 1924 they were recorded at 1 Hampton Villas in Livingstone Road then from 1925 to 1931 at 5 Livingstone Road.(All the samehouse)
Francis died 15 April 1934 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 April, he was licensee of The Lion Inn in West Street at the time of his death. He did not leave a will but administration of his estate was granted on 8 May 1934 at Oxford to Charlotte, the value of the estate was £675 19s 10d.
Charlotte remarried in 1934 in Newbury to Alexander Joseph Carpenter. He had been born 20 June 1903 in Stockross.
In September 1939 when the National Register was taken Charlotte and Alexander were living at 25 Greenlands Road in Newbury, he was a builder, carpenter and joiner.
Charlotte died on 30 January 1969 while living at 15 Greenlands Road in Newbury and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 February 1969. She left a will and probate was granted on 27 February 1969 at Oxford. The value of the estate was £4,050.
