Walter was born on the 15th January 1885 in Hartley Witney, Hampshire, the 2nd son of Henry Hilton and Emma Jane (nee Head).  This was Henry’s 3rd marriage.  Walter was baptised on the 22nd February 1885 Yateley, Hampshire.

His father Henry (Parish Clerk & Bootmaker) was born in 1837 in Yateley, Hampshire and died in 1918 Hartley Witney, Hampshire, the son of Issac (Parish Clerk) and Eliza (nee Sibley).

 

His Mother Emma Jane was born in 1852 Andover, Hampshire and died in 1907 Hartley Witney, Hampshire, the daughter of Joseph Head and Mary (nee Asher Redman).

Walter  (6) is listed as a Scholar living at Church End, Hawley, Yateley, Hampshire.  He also lived with his Father, Henry (54) Parish Clerk and Boot Maker. His Mother Emma J (39).  His brother Francis J (12)  Scholar. His sister Eveline R (9)  Scholar.

Walter (16) is listed as a Grocers Assistant living at Church End, Hawley, Yateley, Hampshire.  He also lived with his Father, Henry (63) Parish Clerk and Boot Maker.  His Mother Emma J (49).  His brother Joseph (8).

Census 1911

 

Walter (26) is listed a Bread Baker living at 6 Park Terrace, Newbury, Berkshire.  He also lived with his wife Sarah (24). His Son Norman Gordon Gregory (0). A boarder Mabel Mary Boxwell (27) General Servant Domestic. .

 

His daughter Doris Isobelle Hilton was born in 1913.  She died on 30th January 1917 at 22 York Road, Newbury, Berkshire from bronchopneumonia.  She is buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, Newbury, Berkshire.

 

Between 1914-1918 Walter was listed in ‘Lives of The First World War’ as serving in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry as a Private and a Corporal. Soldier number 11554.

 

Census 1921

 

Walter (36) is listed as Baker & Roundsman living at 22 York Road, Newbury, Berkshire. His place of work is Hughes (Caterers) Ltd, Bakers and Confectioners. He also lived with his wife Sarah (34).  His Son Norman (10).  His Daughter Vera (0).

 

Walter received a letter from Downing Street dated May 1926 thanking him for his services as a Special Constable.  The letter was signed by The Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

 

On the 29th January 1936 Walter received a letter from the Chief Constables Office, Reading, Berkshire thanking all Officers and Constables of the Berks Constabulary and those Special Constables who were on duty on Tuesday 28th January 1936.  This was for a thank you for his part in the funeral of H.M. King George V.

Walter (1885)  is listed as a Baker living at 22 York Road, Newbury, Berkshire. He also lived with his wife Sarah (1886).  His Daughter Vera (1920). A boarder Percy Charles Lloyd (1911) listed as a Baker.

Walter Gordon Hilton died at the age of 82 on 23rd May 1967 at Battle Hospital, Reading, Berkshire.  The funeral was held on 27th May 1967 at Greenham Church Newbury, Berkshire and then buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, Newbury, Berkshire.
