Brian William John O’Farrell
1901-1964
Brian was born on the 2nd November 1901, in Newbury, the son of William Joseph Gough and Edith Ellen O’Farrell (nee Goodyear) who were married in 1897 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Brian’s father William was a seaman. He was born Joseph William Gough on the 29th May 1866 in Mount Town, Kingstown Dublin, Ireland, the son of Joseph Patrick (a Gas Inspector) and Sophia O’Farrell (nee Gough) who were married on the 18th June 1860 in Christ Church, St Marylebone, Middlesex. William died on the 8th June 1901, (before Brian was born) at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales Australia.
His mother Edith Ellen was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Alfred John and Maria Goodyear (nee Sheerman) who were married in 1865 (marriage registered in Newbury).
William and Edith also had a daughter, Eileen Gertrude, born in 1899.
The 1901 census records Edith (33) living at the Corner House, Gloucester Road, Newbury, with her daughter Eileen (1) and a servant.
Brian’s sister Eileen Gertrude died aged 6 on the 22nd December 1905, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th December.
In 1911 Edith Ellen (42) and Brian (9) were recorded as visitors at the home of Alfred Camp (52), a Draper in Speen, Berkshire.
By 1918 Edith and Brian were living at Carrigeen 27 St John’s Road, Newbury.
Brian’s mother died aged 68 on the 28th May 1935, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st May with her daughter Eileen Gertrude.
Brian married Gladys Irene Norton in 1935 (marriage registered in Newbury)
The 1939 Register records Gladys and Brian living at 27 St John’s Road, Newbury, Brian was working as a Wayleave Officer for the Electricity Supply Company.
Brian died on the 14th August 1964, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his mother and sister, on the 21st August.
Gladys died on the 3rd January 1983. At the time of her death, she was living at 10 Hanover Court, Tower Road, Liphook, Hampshire.
