Emily Ethel, her parents, siblings and early life:

Emily was born on the 12th May 1897 in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Henry and Emily Rolfe (nee Fisher) who were married in 1881 in Kintbury, Berkshire.

Emily’s father Henry was a Milkman. He was born on the 21st November 1859 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Sarah Ralph (nee Cook) who were married in 1858 (marriage registered in Newbury). John was a widower, he married Sarah Fishlock in 1849, they had 3 sons, Peter c1846, George 1849 and John c1851. Sarah died in 1856. Henry died aged 88 in 1948, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th March.

Her mother Emily was born in 1859, she was baptised in 1859 in Kintbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Caroline Fisher. Caroline Honor Fisher was born on the 4th December 1839, she was baptised on the 22nd December 1839 in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the daughter of William and Honor Fisher (nee Greenwood) who were married on the 13th October 1827 in Great Bedwyn. Emily died aged 79, on the 3rd December 1939, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her husband Henry and their daughter Leah Ann, on the 6th December.

Henry and Emily also had the following children:

Leah Ann c1887 (died aged 4 in 1891, buried in the NRC on the 2nd January 1892)

In 1891 Emily’s parents and siblings were recorded living in Ivy Cottage, Greenham.

The 1901 census records Henry (42), Emily (42) and their children, Francis (18), Rose (12), Frederic (10), Daisy (7), Annie (6) and Ethel (3) (Emily Ethel), living at Hope Cottage, York Road, Newbury.

In 1911 Henry (51) was recorded as a Dairyman Milk Vendor (self-employed), he was still living in Hope Cottage with his wife Emily (51), who was helping him in his business and their two youngest daughters, Emily Ethel (13) and Kate Mary (9).

 

Emily Ethel in later life:

Emily Ethel married Edward Brice Vickers in 1927 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Edward Brice (aka George) was born on the 11th October 1886 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of William (a Bricklayer) and Susan Emma (aka Emma) Vickers (nee Dixon) who were married in 1873 (marriage registered in Newbury)

After they were married Edward and Emily lived at 119-120 Bartholomew Street, Newbury. By 1931 they were living at 61, Boundary Road, Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Edward B. Vickers as a Sausage Maker/Cooked Meats Department, living at 61, Boundary Road, Newbury with Emily Ethel.

Edward died aged 54 on the 7th March 1940, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th March.

Emily Ethel remarried later that year (marriage registered in Newbury). Her 2nd husband was David Percy Smith. David died on the 3rd November 1861 in Bognor Regis, Sussex.

Emily died aged 66 on the 9th April 1964 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with her 1st husband Edward Brice Vickers on the 14th April.
