Rose’s birth was registered in the June quarter 1895 in Newbury as Rosie Hazell. According to the 1939 register she was born on the 8th June 1895.

Her mother Julia Hannah Parker was born in 1854 in Newbury, the illegitimate daughter of Lydia Parker. Julia died aged 74 on the 26th February 1930, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd March.

Her father Albert Hazel was born on the 12th November 1852 in Newbury, the son of John and Eleanor (aka Ellen) Hazell (nee Curtis) who were married in 1846 in Newbury. Albert died aged 92 on the 3rd February 1945, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his wife Julia, on the 7th February.

Rose’s parents were married on the 3rd February 1878 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Julia already had a daughter Martha Ellen (aka Ellen) Parker who was born on the 3rd February 1877.

Julia and Albert also had the following children:

In 1881 the family were living at 1 Clare Place, Newbury, Albert was working as a General Labourer.

By 1891 the family had moved to 10 Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury, Albert was recorded as a Labourer in the census for this year.

By 1901 Albert was a self-employed Costermonger.

The 1911 census records Rose (16) as a Domestic Servant, living at home with her father Albert (58,) who was recorded as a Greengrocer, her mother Julia (56) and her brother Edward (21) a Domestic Groom.

Rose married Walter Wallace Dance c1926 (marriage registered in the March quarter 1926 in Newbury)

 (Walter was born 27th September 1899, the son of Edward Stephen and Elizabeth Hannah Dance (nee Nash) who were marriage on the 26th January 1896 in Preshute Wiltshire)

They had one son and three daughters.

The 1939 Register records Rose as a patient in the Public Assistance Institution*** in Rowden Hill, Chippenham, Wiltshire. Her husband Walter was recorded as a General Labourer living at 35 Council Houses, Ramsbury, Wiltshire.

***After 1930, when Boards of Guardians were officially abolished, many former workhouses became "Public Assistance Institutions" — continued to provide care for the elderly and infirm and the destitute.

Rose died aged 65 on the 19th May 1961 in Round Ways Hospital Devizes, Wiltshire, her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th May with her sister Martha Ellen (buried on the 28th January 1956). (Rose died 20 days before her 66th birthday, age recorded as 66 on MI)

Her husband Walter died in 1988 (death registered in Swindon, Wiltshire)
