Herbert Charles Davis
1884-1960
Herbert, his parents, siblings and early life:
Herbert Charles was born on the 1st December 1884, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John White and Agnes Mary Davis (nee Lipscomb), who were married in 1878 (marriage registered in Newbury)
His father John White was a Boilermaker’s Foreman. He was born in 1854 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Kezia Davis (nee May) who were married on the 25th December 1848, at St Mary, Islington, Middlesex.
His mother Agnes Mary was born in 1857, in Pamber Heath, Hampshire. She was baptised on the 30th November 1857, in Tadley, Hampshire, the daughter of Thomas (an Innkeeper) and Eliza Lipscomb (nee Watson) who were married on the 28th August 1852, in Monk Sherborne, Hampshire. (Bride & Groom were both from Pamber)
John and Agnes also had the following children:

Twins: Lilian Margaret and Hilda Agnes, c1892
Twins: Elsie and Eva, 1893 (both died in 1893, Elsie died aged 4 months, she was on the buried 28th July, Eva died aged 6 months, she was buried on the 25th October. Both were buried at St John the Evangelist, Newbury)

In 1891 Herbert (6) was living with his parents and siblings, at Battlefield Cottage, Wash Road, Newbury.
By 1901 Herbert (16) was working as a Coppersmith, he was still living at home (Andover Road, Newbury) with his parents and siblings.
The 1911 census also records Herbert (26) as a Coppersmith. He was still living with his parents and siblings but were now living at Lesworney, Gordon Road, Newbury.
Herbert in later life:
Herbert married Mary Jane Allen in 1912 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Mary Jane, born on the 18th January 1885, in Crofton, Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry John and Elizabeth Ellen Allen (nee Martin) who were married in 1884 (marriage registered in Newbury).
In 1921 Herbert (36), was working as a Coppersmith for Plenty & Son Ltd, Marine Engineers, in Cheap Street. He was living at 5 Craven Street, Newbury with Mary (36).
The 1939 Register records Mary and Herbert, a Marine Coppersmith, living at 56 Greenham Road, Newbury.
Mary and Herbert continued to live in Greenham Road, Newbury until Herbert’s death.
Herbert died aged 75, on the 1st February 1960. He was cremated and his remains were buried in Newtown Road Cemetery, with his father-in-law, Henry John Allen (buried 1940) and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Ellen Allen (buried 1944)
Mary died aged on the 2nd April 1873 at St Mary’s Hospital, Wallingford. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Herbert and her parents, on the 12th April.
Probate: Herbert Charles Davis of 39 Greenham-road Newbury Berkshire died 1st February 1960 Probate London 25th February to Mary Jane Davis widow. Effects: £2777 15s 11d
