Albert, his parents and siblings:

Albert was born on the 24th April 1885 in Newbury Berkshire the son of Thomas and Sarah Curtis (nee Samuels) who were married in 1870 (marriage registered in Newbury).

 

His father Thomas was a Carman, he was born in 1842 in Caversham Oxfordshire the son of James and Sarah Curtis (nee Seymour)who were married in Caversham in 1830.

 

His mother Sarah was born c1849 in Newbury Berkshire the daughter of William Henry and Hannah Samuels (nee Purdue) who were married in Thatcham Berkshire in 1837.

 

Thomas and Sarah also has the following children (all born in Newbury):

Charles 1882

Arthur 1887

Kate 1891

Fred Ernest 1894

 

In 1871 Thomas, Sarah and their 9 month old daughter Sarah Ann were living at 4 Garland Yard, Newbury

 

The 1881 census records the family living at 4 Prince’s Place, Newbury

 

In 1891 Albert (6) was living with his parents and siblings, Louisa (18), Emily (13) and Arthur (4) at 3 Prince’s Place, Newbury.

 

His father died aged 54 in 1897 he was buried on the 17th December at St Mary Greenham.

 

The 1901 census records Sarah living at 12 Smith’s Buildings, Greenham with her children, Charles (18), Albert (15), Arthur (13), Kate (9) and Fred (6).

 

The 1911 census records Sarah as a Charwoman still living at 12 Smith’s Buildings with her children, Albert (25) a Railway Platelayer, Arthur (23) a Domestic Gardener and Fred Ernest (17) a House Painter.


Sarah died aged 84 in 1933 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th May.

 

 

In 1939 Albert was working as a General Labourer, he was living at 71 Greenham Road Newbury

 

Albert died aged 70 on the 13th January 1956 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th January.

 

Probate: CURTIS Albert of 71 Greenham-road Newbury Berkshire died 13th January 1956 Administration Oxford 6th February to Eleanor Annie Cleveland married woman. Effects: £136 7s 9d

(Eleanor Annie Cleveland (nee Curtis) was Albert’s niece, the daughter of his brother Thomas William Curtis)
