Eliza Grey’s maiden name was Kemp; she was born into a Leicester family who had moved to Worcestershire. Her father became Superintendent of Police for Pershore & Evesham in the county. Somehow she became a draper’s assistant in Swindon, where she probably met her husband John Grey, before they married in 1895. John had family connections in Swindon; his two great-uncles were born in Newbury. Gertrude (as she was known), worked with John in the bakeries. She died in 1955 in South London.
