May Flower Hewett 1876 -1954
Richard William Hewett 1852-1939
May Flower Hewett 1876 -1954
Richard was born in Newbury but spent his working life running an ironmonger shop in Alton Hampshire.He married his first wife Emily in 1879 at Brentford. Their son Alfred inherited and continued to run the ironmongers in Alton. Alfred and his wife, Ruth adopted Grace who was born in Sydney, Australia.
Richard was widowed in 1914.
In 1926 he married May Flower Wallis. May was the daughter of George and Sarah, of West Mills. George was a miller and farmer. Richard and May lived in The Mount, Newtown Road.
Richard died in 1939. May rented out part of The Mount to The Law Society in summer 1939 at the beginning of WW2. They moved their office to Newbury but like many other evacuees they went back to London as there had been no bombing there, The Phoney War. However, they left duplicates of their documents at The Mount and they remained there till 1935. Mr Mercado and his family stayed to look after the archive and stayed on after the war ended.
