Alice Allen
1884-1922
Alice Maria Richmond was born in 1884 (birth registered in the December quarter, in Newbury, no mother’s maiden name recorded so probably illegitimate)
She married Horace Henry Allen in 1910 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Horace Henry Allen was born on the 5th November 1891, he was baptised on the 6th December 1891, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Henry (a Porter) and Martha Allen (nee Smith) of Smith’s Buildings, Newbury. Henry and Martha were married on the 22nd January 1889, at St Nicolas, Newbury)
Alice and Horace had the following children (all births registered in Newbury):

Reginald Frank 1912
Christina May c1914
A male child c1915 (died without being given a name in 1915, buried in the NRC on the 9th January)
Horace Francis Leslie 1918
The 1911 census records Alice (26) and Horace (20), a Chauffeur, living at 20 Jack Street, Newbury.
The 1921 records Allice aged (35) and her son Leslie aged (3), (Horace Francis Leslie) living at 2 Marsh Street, Newbury, with an Arthur Cook aged 33yrs 1 month. Alice’s children Christina (7) and Albert (9) were recorded as inmates in the Newbury Workhouse and her son Reginald (8) was living with his grandparents Henry and Martha Allen, at 2 Taylor’s Cottages, Northbrook Street, Newbury.
Alice also had a son Arthur Ronald Cook Allen born in 1921 (possibly the son of Arthur Cook in the 1921 census)
Alice died aged 39 in 1922, in the Newbury Workhouse. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th July.
Horace remarried in 1828. (marriage registered in Newbury) His 2nd wife was Freda Gertrude Ashford
The 1939 Register records Horace, a General Labourer, as a patient in the Berkshire Mental Hospital in Wallingford, Berkshire. He died aged 51, in 1944, in Wallingford
Freda was recorded living at 7 Junction Terrace, Newbury in 1939. She died aged 66, in 1964, Reading, Berkshire
