Caroline Ann Quelch
1865-1947
Caroline Ann was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas (a Brush Maker) and Emma Wheeler (nee Skinner) who were married in 1858 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Caroline’s mother Emma was born c1834 in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Skinner (nee Everett). She died aged 83 on the 29th May 1917 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd June.
Her father Thomas was baptised on the 29th July 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Thomas and Ann Wheeler (nee Collins) who were married on the 25th December 1818 in Speen, Berkshire. Thomas died aged 57 on the 12th October 1889, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th October.

The 1861 census records Caroline’s parents Thomas (26) and Emma (25) living in Kennet Place, Speen, Berkshire.
In 1871 Caroline (5) was living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her parents and siblings.
In the 1881 census Thomas (48), Emma (46), Charles (19), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Samuel (17) an Engine Fitter, Caroline (15), Thomas (13), Emma (11), Edward (9) and Eliza Kate (1) were recorded living in Marsh Road, Newbury.
By 1891 Caroline was working as a General Domestic Servant, she was living at 43 Eastdown Park, Lewisham. Her mother Emma (57) was living at 7 Charles Place, Newbury, with her youngest four children.
Caroline married John Quelch in 1893 (marriage registered in Newbury)
John was born c1860 in Lockinge near Wantage, Berkshire, the son of John and Amelia Quelch (nee Franklin) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury).
The 1901 census records Caroline (recorded as Carrie), John, a Gasworks Labourer and Caroline’s mother Emma, living at 4 Sunny Bank Terrace, King’s Road, Newbury.
All three were again recorded living at 4 Sunny Bank Terrace in 1911, also recorded living with them were two cousins, May Tuckett (11) and Dorothy Tuckett (10).
Caroline was widowed in 1929, John died aged 69 on the 18th December, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st December.
Caroline died aged 82 on the 23rd October 1947, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th October.
Probate: QUELCH – Caroline Ann of 83 Kings-road Newbury Berkshire widow died 23rd October 1947 at County Emergency Hospital Newbury Probate Oxford 27th November to Edwin Collins Wheeler motor engineer. Effects: £1526 13s 8d.
