Ralph Allder

1863-1947

Ralph was born on the 6^th April 1863 in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 19^th February 1864 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Ralph (a Poulterer) and Mary Anne Alder (nee Callis) who were married on the 26^th May 1851 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

His father Ralph was baptised on the 22^nd February 1824 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of James (a Victualler) and Mary Alder (nee Preston) who were married on the 15^th April 1820 at St James the Less Winterbourne, Berkshire. Ralph Allder died aged 64 on the 22^nd September 1888 and was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26^th September (as Ralph Alder).

His mother Mary Ann was baptised on the 22^nd May 1831 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Harriet Callis (nee Piper) who were married on the 18^th April 1815 in East Woodhay, Hampshire. Mary Ann Allder died aged 64 on the 27^th September 1896, she was laid to rest with her husband Ralph in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th September (as Mary Ann Alder)

In 1871 Ralph (7) was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with his parents Ralph (47), a Poulterer and Mary (38) and his siblings Henry (15), a Clerk, Rosa (13), Tom (10) and his grandmother Harriet(t) Callis (78).

The 1881 census records Ralph (17) as a Butcher’s Clerk, her was again recorded living in Northbrook Street with his parents and his brother Tom (20) a Painter.

By 1884 Ralph was an Engraver & Naturalist, he was awarded a medal in this year and was living at 3 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Trade directories records Ralph as an Engineer in Northbrook Street in 1887, a Naturalist at 3 Bartholomew Street in 1889 and 1903, an Engraver at 133 Bartholomew Street in 1907 and a Naturalist at 133 Bartholomew Street in 1915

In 1891 Ralph (27) was recorded as an Engraver and Taxidermist in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. His sister Rosa (33) was recorded living with him as his Housekeeper. They were again recorded in Bartholomew Street, in 1901.

(May was born in on the 28^th April 1877 in Hanover Square London. She was baptised on the 29^th July 1877 in Hanover Square, the daughter of Henry (a Coachman) and Catherine Bray Brickell (nee Jowers) who were married on the 11^th April 1871 at St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico, Middlesex (as William Henry Brickell and Catherine Bray Jowers)).

Ralph and May had two children: Rosa May born 1904 (died aged 21 days, buried in the NRC on the 14^th July 1904) and Ralph born on the 6^th January 1910.

The 1911 census records Ralph (47) as an Engraver & Naturalist, May (33) and their son Ralph (1) living at 133 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

They continued to live at 133 Bartholomew Street until at least 1929, by 1932 they were living at 23 Buckingham Road Newbury

The 1939 Register records Ralph as a Retired Furrier living at 23 Buckingham Road, Newbury, Berkshire with May and their son Ralph, a Bank Clerk.

May died aged 68 on the 11^th January 1946, she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th January.

Ralph died aged 83 on the 2^nd Marth 1947 at the Oak Lodge Nursing Home, Andover Road, Newbury, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th March.
