Newbury’s “Umbrella Man”
MR C. ANDREWS DIES AT 83
A well-known Newbury character, Mr. Charles Henry Andrews, who was in business in the town for more than 60 years, latterly proprietor of the umbrella shop at the corner of Pound-street, passed away in Newbury District Hospital on Saturday.
Born 1 at East Hagbourne, Mr. Andrews came to Newbury as a young man, and was in business as a ladies’ and men’s hairdresser in the Arcade, then at 80 Northbrook-street. It was here, too, that he had slipper baths, which were a great boon to the public in those days.
He then moved to Cheap-street, and for the last 32 years carried on his business at the corner of Pound-street. He was an expert umbrella repairer. Mr. Andrews was 83 years of age.
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday), at the Newtown-road Cemetery, the Rev. G. King officiating.
The family mourners were: Mr. Victor Andrews (son), Mr. Frank W. Andrews (son), Mr. and Mrs. George Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Andrews (sons and daughters-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Stocker, Mr. and Mrs. F. Chivers, Mr. and Mrs.J. Wheeler (sons-in-law and daughters) and Mrs. Grundy (grand-daughter). Mrs. Andrews (widow) was unable to attend through illness.
