TOWN’S CENTENARIAN Mrs. Sarah Mason Dies at 103
Had she lived until August 2nd, Mrs. Sarah Mason, of 196, Andover-Road, Newbury, would have been 104 years of age. Born in the borough, she was baptised in St. Nicolas’ Church on August 31st 1843, and was taken then to live in Northcroft-lane. She went to school at Miss Chance’s, a dame school of the old-fashioned type, and, on leaving, became sewing-maid to the wife of the late Dr. Stephen Hemsted, who then lived in the beautiful old Georgian house now occupied by Messrs. Thake and Paginton, Bartholomew-street.
At the age of twenty-five she married and went to live at Marlborough, moving to Hungerford later. Her husband died in 1900 and she then went to live at Maidenhead, but never really settled there, and came back to Newbury in 1917, finally taking a house near Wash Common, partly because, as a small girl of eight, she remembered playing there.
Mrs. Mason had six children, one son and five daughters, all of whom are living except the son who died in 1943 at the age of seventy-two.
There were great rejoicings in the neat little house on Wash Common on August 2nd, 1943, when she was 100, and the charming little lady was indeed queen of the celebrations. The Royal telegram read; “The King and Queen are much interested to hear that you are celebrating your hundredth birthday and send you hearty congratulations and good wishes.” In the early hours of last Saturday morning she was found to have slept peacefully away. THE FUNERAL
The funeral service took place on February 18th in the Chapel at the Old Newtown-road Cemetery, where all Mrs. Mason’s family are buried, and the committal followed. The Rev. Hilburn, of St George’s Church, Wash Common, officiated. The chief mourners were Miss Jane and Miss Evelyn Mason (second and third daughters, who had lived with their mother always); Miss Matilda Mason, eldest daughter, who had lived at home for the last 30 years, was too ill to attend; Mr Martin (nephew), Miss Young, Mrs. Spicer and Miss Lamdin.

Sarah Warner was born on the 2nd August 1843 in Newbury she was baptised on the 31st August at St Nicolas Church Newbury the eldest child of Henry and Hannah Warner (nee Foster) who were married on the 9th October 1842 at St Mary (The Minster) Reading Berkshire. (Both were single and living in Howard Street, Henry was a Shoemaker and Hannah, a Servant).
Sarah’s father and grandparents:
Henry Warner was born c1818 in Newbury the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Warner (nee Batchelor) who were married on the 15th April 1818 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Thomas was a Labourer.
Henry died aged 70 in 1889 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd March
Sarah’s mother and grandparents:
Hannah Foster was born c1809 in Newbury the daughter of James and Frances Foster (nee Chubb) who were married on the 1st February 1802 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. James was a Sawyer.
Hannah died aged 79 in 1889 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st February.

1851 Sarah (7) was living in the Rose and Thistle Yard, Northcroft Lane, Newbury with her parents and siblings. Her father was recorded as a Master Boot and Shoemaker
The 1861 census records Sarah (17) as a General Servant living in Northcroft Lane Newbury with her family. Her father was recorded as a Boot Maker
Her parents Henry and Hannah were recorded living in Northcroft Lane in both the 1871 and 1881 census and in both census records Henry was recorded as a Labourer.
Sarah married in 1869.

Tom’s family and earlier life:
Tom was a Cooper he was born in Newbury in 1843 (surname recorded as Masom on the GRO website and Mason on freebmd) the son of John and Mary Mason (nee Kimber) who were married in 1831 in Overton Wiltshire.
In 1841 the Mason family (family name recorded as Wason on ancestry) were recorded living in Northbrook Street Newbury, John was recorded as a Postman.
The 1851 census records Tom Maton (7) living in Parr’s Yard Newbury with his parents John (48), a Post Office Messenger and Mary (48) and his siblings, John (18), a Post Office Messenger, Edward (16), an Errand Boy, Jane (14) and Henry (12), an Errand Boy
Tom’s father died aged 49 on the 26th August 1852 (surname recorded as Masson on freebmd) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th August (surname recorded as Mason in burial accounts and Massom on Memorial Inscription)
In 1861 Tom (17) was living with his widowed mother Mary (63) and brother Henry (22) in Simmons Yard Newbury (family surname recorded as Massone on ancestry)
Tom’s mother Mary Massom died aged 78 in 1875 in the Workhouse, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd March.

In 1871 Tom Masom (27), Sarah (27) and their son Tom Leslie (6 months) were living in Holts Row Marlborough Wiltshire.
The 1881 census records the family living in The Mall Hungerford (family name recorded as Masom).
Their daughter Margaret Ellen Mason died aged 9 in 1887 in Hungerford she was buried on the 5th December at St Lawrence Hungerford (mistakenly recorded as Mary Ellen on the NBI 3rd Edition)
In 1891 the family were still living in Hungerford but had moved to Church Street (family name recorded as Mason)
Tom Mason died aged 56 in 1900 in Hungerford he was buried on the 19th January at St Lawrence Hungerford.
Sarah after she was widowed:
The 1901 census records Sarah (56) as a Laundress living in Church Street Hungerford with her daughters Sarah (19), a Laundress and Eveline (15). (Family surname recorded as Madow on ancestry)
By 1911 Sarah (68), a Laundress, was living at 116 Cordwallis Road Maidenhead Berkshire with her daughters Matilda (35), Sarah Jane (29) and Eveline Mary (25). All three daughters were working as Dressmakers.
Sarah’s daughter Bessie Griffin (married Francis William Griffin in 1903) died aged 50 in 1922 in Easthampstead
By 1939 Sarah was living in Newbury (196 Andover Road) with her daughters, Matilda, Sarah Jane and Eveline Mary.
Sarah’s son Tom died aged 72 on the 26th December 1942 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th December.
Sarah died aged 103 on the 15th February 1947 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th February
Two of Sarah’s daughters, Sarah Jane (67) and Eveline Mary (63) (name at death spelt Evelyn) died in 1949 in Newbury both were buried in Shaw Cemetery. Sarah Jane was buried on the 15th March and Evelyn (Eveline) Mary was buried on the 22nd March.
Sarah’s daughter Matilda she died aged 85 in 1960 in Newbury
