Recorder's Notes | Archibald was the son of Edward Gould, Provision's Merchant of 53 Cheap St, Newbury. He became an Engineer Draughtsman, married Agnes Mathews daughter of James, sadler & harness maker of the Market Place, Newbury and lived in Thorne Hill Cottage, Henwick. They had 2 children. He served in the RASC in France in WW1 from 1915-18 as an engineer & became a Staff Sergeant. By 1939 he had taken over the Family Grocers' and the family lived in 53 Cheap St. Their son, John Gould MBE, was foremost in saving the Kennet & Avon Canal. He was a Marine Engineer. As a boy he played on the K&A Canal that ran behind his maternal grandfather's sadlery & harness shop in the Market Place. Agnes nee Mathews was born in Shalbourne but grew up in the Market Place. Agnes was living in 53 Cheap St when she died, Archibald had moved to 4 Rockingham Rd, Newbury by his death.
