Charlotte Veale
1876-1946
Charlotte, her parents, siblings and early life:
Charlotte was born in August 1876 in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Harriett Parr (nee Corderoy) who were married on the 29th August 1858 at All Saints, Poplar.
Her father John was baptised on the 3rd August 1834 at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Richard (a Bricklayer) and Martha Parr (nee Giles) who were married on the 26th July 1826 at St Mary Greenham.
Her mother Harriet was born in Greenham in 1837, the daughter of William ( a Bricklayer) and Sarah Corderoy (nee Parr) who were married on the 14th August 1836 at St Mary, Greenham.
John and Harriet also had the following children:
Martha Jane born 1858 in Bromley
William James born 1860 in Bromley
Sarah Ann born 1863 in Poplar
Harriet Maria born 1865 in Poplar
Thomas born 1867 in Poplar
John born 1869 in Poplar
Ann born 1874 in Newbury (aka Annie)
Elizabeth Clara born 1879 in Newbury
In 1861 John (24) was working as an Excavator, he was living in David Street, Bromley, Middlesex, with Harriett (22), Martha Jane (2) and William James (4 months).
The 1871 census records John (36), as a Labourer Bricklayer, living at 317 St Leonard’s Road, Bromley, with Harriett (34), their children, William (10), Sarah Ann (8), Harriett (6), Thomas (4), John (2) and John’s uncle, Thomas Parr (46), a Bricklayer (surname recorded as Larr on ancestry)
In 1881 John (44), a Labourer, Harriett (44) and their children, Thomas (14), an Errand Boy, John (12), Ann (6), Charlotte (4) and Elizabeth (2), were living at 1 Balfour Court, Newbury, Berkshire.
The 1891 census records John (56) as an Innkeeper at “The Steamer” Cheap Street, Newbury with Harriett (53) and their children, Thomas (23), a Bricklayer, Ann (16), Charlotte (14), Elizabeth (12) and eleven lodgers.
Charlotte’s mother Harriett died aged 56, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th November 1894.
The 1901 census records John (61) as a General Labourer, living at 2 Exchange Road, Newbury, with Elizabeth (23) and Charlotte (24).
Charlotte in later life:
Charlotte married in 1907. She was the 3rd wife of Albert Henry Veale (her brother-in-law)
(Albert Henry was the son of Henry Veale and Jennette Shadrock Norton. He was born in Exeter, Devon but his birth was registered in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 5th July 1868 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Albert joined the Army in 1886, he served in the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) and the Royal Garrison Regiment. On the 25th December 1893 Albert married Charlotte’s sister Annie Parr. Annie died aged 21, she was buried on the 23rd February 1895 at St George, Tilehurst. Albert remarried in 1898 in Reading, his 2nd wife was Beatrice Ellen Bosher. Beatrice died aged 23, she was buried on the 22nd September 1900 in the London Road Cemetery, Reading).
Albert and Charlotte had two daughters. Charlotte Janetta, born on the 29th February 1908 and Winifred Harriet, born on the 22nd December 1911, both girls were born in Newbury.
In 1911 Albert (43), a Labourer, Charlotte (34) and their daughter Jeannette Charlotte (3) (Charlotte Janetta) were recorded living at 2 Derby Cottages, Kings Road, Newbury. His father-in-law John Parr (76) was working as a Labourer (Water Works), he was also living at the same premises with his daughter Bessie (32) (Elizabeth) and his niece, Martha Jane Head (17) but they were recorded living separately.
Her husband Albert Henry died aged 44 on the 23rd January 1912, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th January.
Charlotte (45) was living in Newbury in 1921, with her daughters Charlotte Janetta (13), Winifred Harriet ((9), her father John Parr (87) and her sister Eizabeth Parr (42).
Her father John died on the 15th March 1922 (age at death recorded as 82), he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd March. At the time of his death, he was living in Greenham Mills, Newbury.
Charlotte’s daughter Charlotte Janetta married Sidney Arthur Page in 1932 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Her daughter Winifred Harriet married Samuel John Dumelow (aka John) in 1934 (marriage registered in Newbury)
The 1935 Electoral Register records Charlotte, her married daughter Winifred Harriet Dumelow and her sister Elizabeth Clara Parr, living at 1 North View, Hambridge Road, Newbury
The 1939 Register records Charlotte living at 1 North View, Hambridge Road, Newbury with her brother Thomas, his wife Mary Jane Parr and her sister Elizabeth Parr.
Charlotte died aged 69 on the 4th April 1946, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her husband Albert Henry (buried 1912) and her father John Parr (buried 1922) on the 8th April.
