DEATH OF MR. T.A. THORN
Well-Known Newbury Stonemason
The death occurred on Friday at his residence, 61, Newtown-road, Newbury, of Mr. Thomas Augustine Thorn, at the age of 63. He had been bedridden for three months, but was able to be taken out in a bath chair on VE Day, when he attended the Thanksgiving Service in the Market-place and saw the town decorations.
Mr Thorn was born at Newbury, and all his life had been in the business of a stone, monumental and architectural mason in the Newtown-road, which was founded by his father, Thomas Thorn, 50 years ago. Some time before his father’s death, he went into partnership with him, and then when this occurred about 12 years ago became the proprietor. It has now been taken over by the only son, Mr. Thomas Norman Thorn.
Mr. Thorn was hard-working and ambitious and was greatly respected. He was a volunteer in the old Berks Yeomanry, and then in the last war served in the R.E.’s, being wounded and gassed in France. He joined up the day war broke out and was not demobilised until March 28th, 1919. he was a keen gardener, was a member of the British Legion and a Freemason, belonging to the Victory and Porchester Lodges.
He is survived by a widow, one son, four daughters and nine grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at St John’s Church, the vicar, Rev. E.H. Stenning, officiating.
The family mourners were: Mrs. Thorn (wife), Mr. T.N. Thorn (son), Mr. and Mrs. A. Lock and Mr. and Mrs. W. Marsh (sons-in-law and daughters), Mrs. Stanley Johns and Mrs. K. Pavier (daughters), Mr. Albert Thorn and Mr. Fred Thorn and Mr. Fred Thorn (brothers), Miss Dolly Thorn (sister), Mr. Fred Thorn (uncle), Mr. And Mrs. T. Evans and Mr. and Mrs. A. Samuels (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law).
