Arthur Lewin Salter (1867 – 1922)

                                    Mary Ann Salter (1859 – 1929)

Arthur Lewin Salter was born in 1867 in Newbury, the son of Samuel and Harriet, nee Knight, Salter. Sadly, Arthur’s mother Harriet died the following year aged just 39 and she was buried at St Mary in Boxford on 11 July 1868.

In the 1871 census Arthur was recorded with his father Samuel and sisters Emily aged 14, Alice aged 12 and Annie aged 8 in Donnington with Samuel working as a gardener. Ten years later in the 1881 census Arthur was still living in Donnington with his father and sister Annie, Samuel was still a gardener and Annie was a general servant.

Arthur married Mary Ann Jennings in Q4 1889 in Newbury. Mary was born in 1859 in Wix in Essex, parents Isaac and Harriet. She was recorded with her parents and siblings living in Wix in the 1861 and 1871 censuses but no trace of her in 1881.

In the 1891 census Arthur and Mary were living at 2 Compton Cottages in Speen with Arthur recorded as a cellarman.

Soon after the census they moved to South View, off Kings Road in Newbury as Arthur was recorded in the 1894 electoral register at this address.

Subsequently in the 1901 census Arthur and Mary were recorded at 10 South View with Arthur a general labourer. They were still living at South View in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Arthur was a labourer in iron works in 1911 and then in 1921 an engineer labourer working for Plentys Ltd but incapacitated.

Arthur died on 18 May 1922 while still living at 10 South View and was buried on 23 May at Newtown Road Cemetery.

Mary died on 25 February 1929 while living at 97 Kings Road in Newbury and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 February.
