DEATH OF REV. CHARLES DAVIS

Many Associations with Newbury

The Rev. Charles Davis, whose death took place at Southbourne on November 28th, aged 78, though not born in Newbury, had many associations with the town, where he spent all his early years.  Mr Davis began life as a teacher in the Wesleyan Schools, in which he had been a pupil under Mr William Dalby and Mr G H Bates.  His teaching life was mainly served under Mr W W Bowring.

After training at Westminster College, Mr Davis returned to his old school as second maser.  Later he took a school in Cornwall, where he served with great success fo 33 years, and was, too, for 25 years on the staff of the evening school at the Camborne School of Mines.  He was connected intimately with the Wesleyan Church, and his services were greatly sought throughout the district.  Yet later, at a time when he might well have retired, he took the pastorate of the Cngregational Church in Salisbury.  This he held for ten years, during which the membership of the church greatly increased.

Mr Davis married Miss Caroline Pullen, of Newbury, who, with their daughter, survives him.  He is to be buried in the Old Cemetery today (Thursday), after a service at the Methodist Church, Northbrook street.
