Emily Laura Sturgess

1869-1942

 

Emily her parents and her early life:

Emily Lynch was born on the 21st November 1869 in Newbury the daughter of William and Sarah Ann Lynch (nee Winter) who were married on the 6th September 1841 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Emily’s father: William was a Shoemaker/Cordwainer he was born c1822 in Newbury the illegitimate son of Maria Paice Lynch and Thomas Gough, a Porter. William died aged 74 on the 20th December 1899 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December

Emily’s mother: Sarah Ann was born c1823 in Reading Berkshire the daughter of James and Hannah Winter (nee Goddard) who were married on the 22nd November 1823 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Sarah Ann died aged 73 on the 22nd June 1898 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June.

Emily’s siblings: James 1842, Joseph c1846, George Henry 1848, William 1851, Sarah Ann 1854, Robert 1856, Hannah Maria 1859, Henry Edward 1862 and Frederick 1865.

The family were recorded living in Old Newtown Road Newbury in the 1851, 1881 and 1891 census. The 1871 census records them living in Old Road and the 1861 census records them living in Bartholomew Street Newbury.

Emily:

Emily Laura Lynch married Daniel Sturgiss (a Hairdresser) in 1894 (marriage registered in Newbury), they had two children, Reginald Sturgiss born in 1894 and Mabel Ethel Sturgess born in 1895.

In 1901 the family were living at 1 St John’s Villa Cottages, Newbury but by 1911 they had moved to 1 Albert Cottages, Jubilee Road Newbury. (Ancestry have their surname recorded as Sturgess in both the 1901 and 1911 census records)  The Berkshire Electoral Registers record them living at 1 Primrose Villas, Jubilee Road from 1919-1924 and 13 Jubilee Road in 1825

Daniel Sturgess died aged 60 in 1828 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the7th January

The 1939 register records Emily living alone at 4 Lower Raymonds Almshouses Newtown Road Newbury she died aged 72 in 1942 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th November.
