John Edward Orams
1847-1893
John, his parents, siblings and early life:
John Edward was born in Crick, Northampton, he was baptised on the 17th August 1847 at St Margaret of Antioch, Crick, the son of Jeremiah (a Watchmaker) and Jane Orams (nee Watts) who were married on the 22nd June 1846 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex.
His father Jeremiah was baptised in 1825 in Stowmarket Suffolk, the son of Edward and Matilda Orams (nee Balls) who were married in 1821 in Framlingham Suffolk.
His mother Jane was baptised in the 15th February 1829 at All Saints, West Haddon, Northamptonshire, the daughter of John (a Butcher) and Sarah Watts (nee Rathbone) who were married on the 30th August 1824 at St Faith, Kilsby, Northamptonshire.
Jeremiah and Jane also had the following children:
Mary 1848 (Mary Matilda) in Crick
Jeremiah Rossuth 1849 (died aged 3 months in c1850, buried as Jeremiah Kossuth Orams) on the 5th Feb)
Jeremiah Kossuth 1851 in West Haddon
George Walter 1853 in West Haddon
Frederick Watts c1855 in West Haddon
Sarah Jane c1857 in West Haddon
William Josiah 1858 in West Haddon
Thomas Cromwell 1860 in West Haddon
Martha Elizabeth 1861 in West Haddon
The 1851 census records Jeremiah (26), as a Watch Jobber, Clockmaker, Working Jeweller, living in West Haddon, with Jane (22), John Edward (3) and Mary Matilda (2).
In 1861 John Edward (13) was recorded as a Watch and Clockmaker, living in the High Street, Daventry, Northamptonshire, with his parents and siblings.
John in later life:
The 1871 census records John Edward (23) as a Watch and Clock Maker, lodging in Yeovil Somerset.
John married Sarah Sophia Kirkpatrick in 1877 (marriage registered in Abingdon)
(Sarah was born in 1850 in Abingdon, the daughter of John and Catherine Kirkpatrick (nee Stockwell)
By 1879 John and Sarah were living in Newbury
The following announcement appeared in the local paper:

WATCH & CLOCK MAKER
Begs to inform the Clergy, Gentry, and Public generally of Newbury and the District, that he has opened an Establishment at
38 Cheap Street, (Opposite Cattle Market Street) Newbury.
The 1881 census records John (33) as a Watchmaker living in West Street, Newbury with Sarah (31) and two Apprentice Watchmakers.
The 1887 Kelley’s Directory records John Edward as a Watchmaker at 17, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.
The Electoral Registers record John in Bartholomew Street in 1885, 17, Bartholomew Street in 1886-1888 and 17, Bartholomew Street and Pound Street successively in 1889.
In 1891 John was recorded aged 43, as a Watchmaker and Jeweller, living at 93 Bartholomew Street, Newbury with Sarah Sophia (41).
John died aged 45 on the 17th January 1893, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd January (funeral ceremony at St John the Evangelist, Newbury)
The 1911 census records Sarah Sophia (50) living on private means, at 151 Goddard Avenue, Swindon, Wiltshire.
Sarah died aged 84 in 1934, in Swindon.
Probate: ORAMS John Edward of Newbury Berks watchmaker died 17th January 1893 Administration Oxford 3rd June to Sarah Sophia Orams widow. Effects: £43 11s 6d
