Percy was born in Newbury Berkshire. He was baptised on the 24th February 1886, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Charles and Martha Ann Rawlings (nee Willis) who were married on the 25th December 1871, at St John the Evangelist, Newbury. Percy died aged 14 days, the day after he was baptised. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st March 1886.

Percy’s family:

Percy’s father Charles was a Plasterer. He was born on the 3rd August 1852, he was baptised on the 31st October 1852, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Charles (a Bricklayer) and Esther Rawlings (nee Blackwell) who were married on the 19th October 1851, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury (Charles Rawlins a Bricklayer, was a widower).

His mother Martha and her twin brother Michael were born on the 24th June 1849, they were baptised on the 29th July 1849, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the children of Michael and Mary Ann Willis (nee Brindley) who were married on the 28th May 1842, at St Nicolas Chuch, Newbury.

Charles and Martha Ann also had the following children born in Newbury:

The 1881 census records Charles (28), Martha (29) and their children, Sarah (8), Rebecca (6), Edith (4), Charles (3) and Albert (11 months), living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire.

 

 

By 1891 the family had moved to Shrewsbury Terrace, the census for this year records the family as follows: Charles (38), a Builder, (All other census records record Charles as a Plasterer), Ann (40), (Mary Ann) Rebbeca (16), (Rebecca) a Dressmaker, Edith Ellen (14), Elbert (11), (Albert) Frederick (8), Ada (6), Emma (3) and Raas (1) (Rose).

The 1901 census records Charles (48), Martha (51), Albert (20), a Plasterer, Ada (17), a Dressmaker, Elsie (13) (Emma Elsie) and Florence (10), living in Chesterfield Road, Newbury.

In 1911 Charles (58), Martha (60), their children Charles (32), a Carpenter, Florence (19), a Ticket Checker, their grandson Charles (7) (son of their son Charles and his wife Fanny (nee Spicer) and a visitor, Charles Critchley (25), a Tailor’s Traveller, were recorded living at The Laurels, Enborne Place, Newbury, Berkshire.

Percy’s father Charles died aged 63, on the 23rd December 1915. He was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th December.

In 1921 Percy’s widowed mother Martha (70) was still living at The Laurels, Enborne Place. Her grandson Walter Charles Rawlings (18) an Apprentice Motor Engineer, at Martin and Chillingworth, The Broadway, Newbury, was living with her.

Martha died aged 79, on the 16th March 1929. She was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th March.
