Frederick Elliott (1839 – 1902)

Ann Elliott (1829 – 1861)

Frederick Elliott was born in 1839 in Newbury, the son of Henry and Jane, nee West, Elliott. Frederick was recorded with his parents in Northbrook Street in Newbury in the 1841 census, his father Henry was a painter. Ten years later in the 1851 census they were still living in Northbrook Street and Henry was still a painter.

Frederick married Annie (or Ann) Sharp on 14 August 1858 at St Mary in Greenham. Ann was born circa 1829 in Newbury. She was the daughter of John and Martha (nee Groves) Sharp who were married on 9 November 1819 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Ann had at least two siblings, James born circa 1823 & Eliza circa 1830. In the 1851 census Ann was living with her father John in Shaw Lane, John was recorded as a wheelwright. Her mother Martha had died in 1830 and she was buried 23 July 1830 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Her father John died in 1865 and was buried 22 October 1865 at All Saints, Boyne Hill in Maidenhead.

Ann died 23 January 1861 while living at Westcombe Buildings in Newbury. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 January 1861.

A few months later in the 1861 census Frederick was recorded as a lodger at 70 Northbrook Street in Newbury and his occupation was a painter and paper hanger.

Frederick remarried on 14 January 1863 at St Mary in Speenhamland to Mary Salt. Mary was born 1840 in Speen to Henry and Harriet, nee Cumley, Salt. In the 1861 census Mary was living with her parents in Speen, Henry was recorded as a police constable and Mary was a dress maker.

In the 1871 census Frederick and Mary were living with Mary’s father Henry in Speenhamland with their children Frederick aged 7, Alfred George aged 5 and Ada aged one. Frederick was recorded as a house decorator.

Frederick and Mary were living in Northcroft Lane in Newbury in the 1881 census along with children Alfred aged 14, Ada aged 11, Edward aged 9 and Elizabeth aged 5. Frederick and Alfred were both recorded as decorators. Ten years later in the 1891 census Frederick and Mary were residing at 3 Northcroft Place with children (Alfred) George aged 24, Elizabeth aged 11 and Emma aged 8. Frederick was a paper hanger and George a groom.

By the 1901 census Frederick and Mary were living by themselves at 3 Ashton Court in Bartholomew Street with Frederick a house painter and paper hanger.

Frederick died December 1902 was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 December 1902. He was still living at 3 Ashton Court at the time of his death.

Mary was living with her daughter Elizabeth Jane Tanner and her family in the 1911 census at Silchester, Grosvenor Avenue in Wallington in Surrey.

Mary died 12 August 1924 while living at 2 Yew Tree Cottages in Shaw Road. She was buried at Shaw Cemetery on 16 August 1924.

Frederick’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, his father Henry on 18 December 1855 and his mother Jane on 31 December 1855.
