James, his parents, siblings and early life:

James Edwinson Warne was baptised on the 8th January 1826 at St Nicolas Church Newbury Berkshire the son of James and Elizabeth Warne (nee Peck) who were married on the 2nd March 1821 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Hardwicke Marriage Index has the surname recorded as Warn)  His father James was recorded on the baptism record as a Willow Cutter.

His mother was born c1794 in Sharftesbury Dorset. She died aged 68 in 1864 and was buried on the 7th September at St Mary Greenham. (No birth, death or census records found for his father yet)

James and Elizabeth also had the following two children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Maria baptised on the 18th July 1821 (father recorded as a Willow Manufacturer)

William (surname spelt Warn) baptised on the 12th June 1823 (father recorded as a Willow Cutter)

Elizabeth also had an illegitimate daughter Esther baptised on the 12th September 1830 the father was recorded as Joseph Bennett, occupation, Shoemaker.

The 1841 census records Elizabeth (43) as a Laundress, living in Mary Hill Newbury with her children William (18), a Brick Labourer, James (14) and Esther (11). (Surname recorded as Nam on ancestry)

James in later life:

James was a Cordwainer, he married Sarah Field in 1850 in Newbury. (Sarah was born in Spitalfield Middlesex c1826 the daughter of Edward and Lucy Field. Sarah already had a son James Field born in 1848 who was baptised on the 30th July 1848 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, no father recorded on the baptism record)

James and Sarah had the following children:

Esther c1855 (died aged 1in 1856 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st April as Hester Warner)

Caroline 1857

Elizabeth 1860

In 1851 James (23) was recorded living in Golding’s Yard Newbury with his widowed mother Elizabeth (57) and his son/stepson James (3). His wife Sarah and his 1 month old daughter Ann (recorded as Elizabeth. Birth registered as Ann in the June quarter 1851) were recorded living in Old Cattle Market Newbury, also recorded in the household was a Nurse.

James died aged 33 in 1861 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th January

The 1861 census records his widow Sarah working as a Charwoman she was still living in Old Cattle Market but only her children James (12), Ann (10) and Elizabeth (1) were recorded living at home. Her daughter Caroline was recorded living with her aunt and uncle, George (39) and Caroline (45) Davis at 1 Moon Court St May Reading (surname recorded as Warner).  James’s mother Elizabeth (64) was recorded as a Laundress, living in Greenham.

Sarah died aged 33 the following year she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th May 1862.
