George Williams

He was baptised on 12 April 1815 at St. Mary’s Church, East Ilsley. His parents were William Jones Williams, gentleman farmer, and Mary (née Allin or Allen).

George grew up with his siblings at East Ilsley Hall, a substantial house situated in Broad Street, East Ilsley, with stabling, garden, and pleasure grounds, and 6 cottages, all near the celebrated Lambourn Downs and training establishments.

His siblings were:

William Jones Williams b. 1810, became a farmer; Francis baptised 18/2/1814, died ten days later;  Albert b. 1816, became an attorney and solicitor (non-practising); Caroline b. 1819; Sarah b. 1821, married James Hulbert, an estate agent;  Helen b. 1822; and Francis b. 1824, became a farmer.  Their father died on 10 April 1840 aged 67 years and their mother Mary continued to live at the Hall.

From the 1851 census, George and Francis were living at the Hall with their widowed mother, their sister Caroline, and two live-in house servants.  George and Francis were farmers.

On 31 May 1854, at the Church of St. Mary, Speen, George married Margaret Robinson, fifth daughter of Richard Rodd Robinson, surgeon, and general practitioner of Speen Hill.

He died on 2 January 1861, aged 45 years, at the residence of his father-in-law.  The 1861 census taken on 7 April 1861 records that the Robinson family was living at 73 Northbrook Street, and his widow Margaret having returned to her family.  The burial record states that he was buried from Ilsley on 5 January 1861.
