William Elliott

William Elliott (1816 – 1892)

William Elliott was baptized 11 November 1816 at St Mary the Virgin in Aldermaston. His parents were Stephen and Margaret, nee Steptoe, Elliott.

In the 1851 census William was recorded along with his nephews Thomas aged 13 and Frederick aged 11 living at Radnall Farm in Chieveley. William was recorded as a farmer of 35 acres employing one man and two boys. His nephews were both recorded as agricultural labourers.

It is thought Radnall farm was sold in 1860 after the death of William’s father Stephen as it was part of his estate.

William was recorded living at Snelsmore Common in the 1861 census and recorded as a late farmer, which ties in with the farm just being sold. Ten years later in the 1871 census William is still living at Snelsmore Common but now recorded as a farmer.

In the 1881 census William was living by himself in North Heath, Winterbourne and recorded as a farmer of three and one quarter acres. The enumerator also recorded he was deaf.

William was recorded living back at Snelsmore Common in the 1891 census along with his sister Martha Stanford. He was recorded as living on his own means while Martha was recorded as a housekeeper.

William died 30 October 1892 at Winterbourne and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 4 November 1892. He is commemorated on the same headstone as his parents. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 3 November 1892 which read:-

“ELLIOTT – Oct 30, at Winterbourne, William son of the late Stephen Elliott of Newbury, deeply regretted aged 76.”

William’s parents were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, his father Stephen on 7 July 1860 and mother Margaret on 21 January 1864. In addition, three of his sisters were also buried at Newtown Road, Martha Sandford on 1 June 1894, Elizabeth Ann Elliott on 1 June 1911 and Margaret Elliott on 9 November 1911.
