THE LATE MISS CLEWS
The funeral of Miss Frances E. Clews, late schoolmistress of the Newbury Union, whose death occurred on Tuesday January 19th, after only a few days illness of acute bronchitis, took place on Thursday afternoon in the Newbury Cemetery amid many tokens of respect. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Atkins, chaplain of the Workhouse, and around the open grave two hymns were sung, “Brief life is here our portion” and “My God my Father while I stray.”
The ceremony was deeply impressive, and a large number of persons were present. The coffin, which was of polished oak, was covered with wreaths sent by the Rev. J. and Mrs Atkins, Mrs Harcourt, of Radstock, Miss Clay of Nuneaton, Comley and Cissy, and the Workhouse boys and girls.
The mourners included Messrs Henry and John Clews, Mr. Thomas Chetwin Wagstaff (brothers), Mr. and Mrs. Harcourt (uncle and aunt), and all the officers and children from the Newbury Workhouse.
The funeral arrangements were satisfactorily carried out by Mr. Walter Church.
