Transciption: | ETHEL LUCKETT The late Miss Luckett, headmistress of St. John’s infants for 37 years Her many friends and particularly old scholars heard with much regret of the passing of Miss Ethel Luckett at Ingleside Nursing Home on Saturday evening, February 26.
Miss Luckett came to Newbury in September 1899 to take charge of St. John’s Infant School, and continued as headmistress there until her retirement in March, 1926.
During those 37 years, she carried out her duties most conscientiously, with great devotion to the children under her care, who loved her as a teacher, councillor and friend. For nearly all this period she was superintendent of the infants’ Sunday School, and up to the time of the war conducted two Bible classes for boys and also ran a Boys’ Club.
Latterly she was in charge of a women’s Bible class, which as her infirmity increased, she held at her own home.
She will be much missed at St. John’s Church, for she was a zealous worker and gave her best in the service of the parish. At one time she was secretary of the Parochial Church Council.
Miss Luckett was 72 years of age. The funeral service was conducted by the vicar Rev EH Stenning, at St. John’s Church on Tuesday last week.
