| Transciption: | FREDERICK PEDLEY LEA DEATH OF AN OLD INHABITANT-- On Friday there passed away Mr. Frederick Pedley Lea, and his death severs yet another link which connects the present with a receding past. Some 50 years ago Mr. Lea first set up as practical basket-maker and turner, and was almost the only one following this vocation in Newbury. Some twenty-two years ago he opened at 76, Northbrook-street a toy warehouse, being assisted therein by his daughters Seven years ago he gave up business, and was appointed to one of Kimber's almshouses. But the change never seemed to suit his constitution and on Friday morning, at a quarter to eleven, passed peacefully away. Mr. Lea married in 1841, and had five daughters and three sons. He was a churchman, a Liberal in politics, and a temperance supporter. The funeral took place yesterday at the Cemetery, the Rev. Nigel Nash officiating. The mourners were the widow, Mr and Mrs.Tidbury (son-in-law and daughter), Miss Lea and Miss E. Lea (daughters), Miss Hamblin (grand daughter); while two daughters were unable to be present Mrs. Newman, who is in America, and Mrs Hamblin, in London. One son is in Australia, and another in Brighton, both of whom were unable to be present. Wreaths were sent by the members of the family, Miss Ward, Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Crook (Chieveiey), Mr. East, Mr. Randall (London), Mr. Montague (London), Mr Jones (London). The coffin plate bore the inscription: FREDERICK PEDLEY LEA Died October 13, (1899) Aged 78
Mr F. James was the undertaker.
