Charles Atkins
1868-1922
Charles was born in North Heath, Berkshire, he was baptised in Leckhampstead, Berkshire in 1868, the son of George and Eliza Atkins (nee Painting/Painter) who were married in Chieveley, Berkshire in 1867.
George was born in 1845 in North Heath, he was baptised in 1845 in Winterbourne, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Charlotte Atkins nee Cook) who were married in 1820 in Winterbourne. George died aged 73 in 1918, he was buried on the 26th October at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley.
Eliza was baptised in 1837 in Chieveley, Berkshire, the daughter of Daniel and Lucy Painter (nee Smith) who were married in 1827 in Chieveley. Eliza died aged 55 in 1891, she was buried on the 30th June at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley.
George and Eliza also had the following children:
Joseph 1867 (died aged 3 weeks 1867, buried 21st July at St James the Less Winterbourne)
James 1869
Frederick John 1872 (died aged 6 in 1877, buried 30th April at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley)
Lucy Ann 1877
Richard George 1880 (died 1880, buried 15th September at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley)
The 1871 census records Charles (2), living in North Heath with his parents George (26), an Agricultural Labourer and Eliza (31), his younger brother James (1) and his grandmother Charlotte Atkins (71).
In 1881 Charles (12) was living at Folly Cottages, Chieveley, with his father George (36) a Road Man, his mother Eliza (44), his brother James (11) and his sister Lucy (4).
The 1901 census records Charles (33) as a General Labourer, boarding at 2 Union Court, Newbury.
In 1911 Charles (43) was recorded as an Agricultural Labourer/Inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.
Charles died aged 54 in 1922, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th March.
