Fred Collins was born in 1869 in Greenham, the son of Charles and Emma, nee Smith, Collins. He was recorded with his parents and siblings living in Greenham in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses. His father was an agricultural labourer in 1871 and a tanner in 1881.

 

Charlotte Tegg was born on 14 September 1879 in Bucklebury, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah, nee Brooks, Tegg. She was recorded with her parents and siblings living in Bucklebury in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses. Her father was an agricultural labourer in 1871 and a farm labourer in 1881. Charlotte attended Frilsham Church of England school from March 1875 to 24 October 1879. Her younger sister Sarah also attended the school starting in April 1876 and leaving on 24 October 1879, the same day as Charlotte, so perhaps the family moved.

 

Fred Collins married Charlotte Tegg in 1890 in Newbury.

 

In the 1891 census Fred and Charlotte were living in Mill Lane in Greenham next door to Fred’s parents and Fred was a general labourer.

 

On 21 May 1899 Charlotte had a stillborn son, who was buried at Newtown Road cemetery on 27 May. A birth announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 25 May 1899 as below.

 

COLLINS – May 21, at 2 Perseverance Cottages, Park Lane, Newbury, the wife of Fred Collins, of a son (stillborn).

 

In addition to the stillborn son Fred and Charlotte had three children, Frederick Thomas (1891), Florence Mabel (1893) and Leonard Charles Donald (1910) who were all born in Greenham. Florence married Robert John Butler on 3 August 1912 at St John the Evangelist in Newbury.

 

In the 1901 census Fred and Charlotte were living in 2 Highgate Villas, Queens Road in Newbury with children Frederick and Florence, Fred was a milkman.

 

Fred and Charlotte were living in North House, Hambridge Road in Newbury in both the 1911 and 1921 censuses along with sons Frederick and Leonard in 1911 but only Leonard in 1921. Fred was recorded as a milkman in 1911 and a dairyman in 1921.

 

Fred died on 4 July 1936 aged 67 at the Emergency Hospital while still living at North House. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 8 July.

 

When the national register was compiled on 29 September 1939 Charlotte was living at 11 Almhouses, West Mills in Newbury.

 

Charlotte died on 2 January 1945 aged 74 while still living at the Almhouses in West Mills and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 6 January.
