Charles Alexander Pyke was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Hannah Pike. He died aged 2 months, on the 12th May 1899. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th May.

Charles Alexander’s family:

His father Charles was born c1859, he was baptised on the 20th February 1859, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Charles and Mary Pike/Pyke (nee Day) who were married on the 25th November 1855, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His mother Hannah was born on the 19th March 1859, in Lambourn, Berkshire, the daughter of Charles and Mary Day (nee Gilbert) who were married on the 31st December 1836, at St Michael and All Angels, Lambourn. (Hannah gave birth to a son, William Charles Day, in 1877. He died aged 5 in 1882. Hannah married Henry John Hill on the 20th April 1880. They had the following children: Edith Kate, 1880, Albert Henry, c1882, Frederick Arthur, 1884, William Charles, c1888, Beatrice Ellen, c1888, Edward James, c1890, Henry John, 1891, Alice, c1894 and Sidney Frank, 1896. Hannah was widowed in 1896, Henry died aged 40, he was buried in the NRC on the 16th June).

Chales Pike and Hannah Hill (nee Day) married in 1897 (marriage registered in the December quarter, in Newbury)

They also had the following children:

Evelyn Annie Pyke, born 1902

Arthur James Pyke, born 1904

The 1901 census records Charles Pike (42), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Hannah (42), Frederick Hill (17), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Ellen Hill (13), Edward Hill (11), Henry Hill (9), Alice Hill (7), Frank Hill (5) and May Pike (10 months), living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury.

In 1911 Charles Pike (52), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Hannah (52), Frederick Hill (27), a Plasterer, Henry John Hill (19), a Builder’s Labourer, Sidney Frank Hill (15), a Messenger Boy, Edith Pike (10), Evelyn Annie Pike (8) and Arthur James Pike (6) were again recorded living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace.

Charles Pike died aged 75, on the 18th April 1934, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st April, with his parents Charles (c1825-1900) and Mary (c1834-1915)

The 1939 Register records Hannah living at 16, Southdown Road, Thatcham, Berkshire, with her married son Arthur and his family.

Hannah Pike died aged 81 on the 16th February 1941. She was buried on the 19th February, in Shaw Cemetery, Newbury.
