Transciption: | EDWIN TOOMBS THE LATE MR. EDWIN TOMBS The death, which took place on Friday, of Mr. Edwin Tombs, removed an old townsman, one who for nearly half-a-century had been connected with the trade of the northern end of the town. Mr Tombs was the only surviving son of the late Mr Israel Tombs, a noted Newburian in his day, and was apprenticed to Messrs. C. and J. Webb, with whom he remained for twenty-five years. On leaving them some twenty years ago he started the grocery and provision business in Oxford-street with which be has since been identified Some nine years ago he received a great shock in consequence of the sadden death of a son, and this brought on paralysis which has gradually affected the whole system, rendering him quite helpless daring the last three years. Mr. Tombs leaves a widow and five sons. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the interment being in the family vault at the cemetery. The coffin was of polished oak, with brass fittings, and inscribed:— EDWIN TOMBS Died October 7th 1898 Aged 58 years The service was conducted by Rev. G. Bolderston, and the mourners included Mrs. Tombs (widow). the five sons, Messrs. George, Harry. Walter. Charles, and Richard Tombs, Mr. and Mrs. G. Elms, Miss Elms, and the employees of the firm. Among the wreaths were those sent by the following: ….. The funeral arrangements were carried out Mr. Hanington, of Northbrook-street.
