The defendant pleaded that the children were unfit in health to be vaccinated and produced certificate to that effect. The case was adjourned for one week.

Elisha, his parents, siblings and early life:

Elisha was born on the 9^th July 1840 in Speen, Berkshire, the son of Samuel and Sarah Oliver (nee Webb) who were married on the 19^th April 1829 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.

His father Samuel was a Weaver (Ribbon and Silk). He was born c1803 in Newbury, the son of Jesse and Jane Oliver (nee Hill) who were married on the 29^th July 1798 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Samuel died aged 90 on the 20^th January 1890 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th January.

His mother Sarah as born c1811 in Thatcham Berkshire. She died aged 55 in 1865 and was buried on the 8^th January at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

Elisha’s siblings were:

Oliver Jesse baptised in 1831 in Speen

Sydonia baptised 1835 in Speen

Ann Oliver born 1837 (died soon after birth, buried 4^th October 1837 at St Mary the Virgin Speen)

Samuel Hill born c1839 (died soon after birth, buried 8^th April 1939 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen)

Dorcas born c1843

Elizabeth born 1845

Clara born 1847

Emily Jenny born 1850

Eliza born 1852

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records record the family living in London Road, Speen, Berkshire as follows:

1841: Samuel (35), Sarah (30), Chapper (10) (Oliver Jesse), Synllonus (6) (Sydonia,) Elisha (11 months)

1851: Samuel (47), Sarah (40,) Syndonia (15), Elisha (10), Dorcas (8), Elizabeth (5), Clara (3) and Emily (10 months)

1861 Samuel (57), Sarah (50), Elisha (20), a Shoemakers Porter, Dorcas (18), Elizabeth K. (16), and Emily J. (10)

Elisha in later life:

Elisha married in 1870

Marriage details:
Place: All Saints, Mile End, New Town, Stepney, Middlesex

Date: 17^th July 1870

Groom: Elisha Oliver, aged 30, bachelor, occupation, Shoe Maker, abode, 1 Buxton Street

Bride: Jane Singer, aged 19, spinster, abode, 27 Church Street

Fathers: Samuel Oliver, a Weaver and Henry Singer, a Bricklayer

Witnesses: Henry Singer and Dorcas Jones

Bride and Groom both signed

(Jane was born on the 10^th May 1851 in Whitechapel, London, the daughter of Henry and Ann Singer (nee Lloyd)

Elisha and Jane had the following children:

In 1881 Elisha (40), a Shoemaker, Jane (30) and their children, Jane (8), George (7) and John Henry (1) were recorded living at 2 Ernest Place, Bethnal Green, Middlesex.

The 1891 census records Elisha (50) as a Shoemaker, living at 11 Marsh Street, Newbury, with Jane (40), William (9), Miriam (7), Ann (3) and Frederick (2)

In 1889 the following appeared in the newspaper:

Elisha died aged 58 on the 29^th August 1898, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd September.

The 1901 census records Jane (49) as a Monthly Nurse, living in an Almshouse in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her children, Annie (13) and Frederick (12).

The 1911 census again records Jane as a Monthly Nurse, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury. Her daughter Miriam (27) a Tobacconist’s Assistant, was recorded living with her.

Electoral Registers record Jane living 11 King John’s Almshouses Newbury from 1918-1924. By 1926 she was recorded living at 21, Argyle Road, Newbury. She has been recorded living in Argyle Road until at least 1951.

In 1921 Jane was recorded in the household of her son William Elisha (Elisha William) his wife Ada and their daughter Marjorie, in the parish of Bratton, Westbury, Wiltshire.

The 1939 Register records Jane as a Nurse, living at 21 Derby Road, Newbury (Derby Road has possibly been mistakenly recorded for Argyle Road. It looks as if the person recording this document has recorded the Argyle Road even numbers the crossed over the road to record the odd numbers and has recorded these as Derby Road).

Jane died aged 100 in 1951, in Newbury.
