William Prince c1814-1898
William Prince c1814-1898 William was baptised on the 24th April 1814, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Prince (nee Pearce) (***Benjamin’s 3rdwife, see below) William’s mother Elizabeth was born c1786, in Berkshire. His father Benjamin was baptised on the 24th March 1776, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of John and Jane Prince (nee Turner) who were married on the 10th October 1753, in Beedon, Berkshire. Benjamin married Phoebe Curtis on the 13th June 1796, in Leckhampstead. They had two sons baptised in Chieveley, Thomas, baptised 25th June 1797 and Richard baptised 7th April 1799 (died 1800, buried 26th Jan. at St James the Less, Winterbourne). Benjamin was widowed in 1800. Phoebe was buried on the 29th March, at St James the Less, Winterbourne. Benjamin remarried on the 20th November 1800, in Leckhampstead. His 2nd wife was Elizabeth Brunsdon. They had two sons, Isaac, baptised 25th April in 1802, in Chieveley and Jonathan, baptised 15th October 1803, in Chieveley (died 1804, buried 17th March, at St Mary, Chieveley). Benjamin was widowed again in 1803. Elizabeth was buried on the 22nd October, at St Mary, Chieveley. ***Benjamin married again on the 31st March 1804, in Leckhampstead. His 3rd wife was Elizabeth Pearce. William’s full siblings were: Rachel, baptised 15th December 1806, in Winterbourne (possible death 1806, buried 19th December, at St James the Less, Winterbourne) Hannah, baptised 29th May 1808, in Chieveley John, baptised 25th Decmeber 1809, in Chieveley Mary Ann, baptised 29th September 1811, in Chieveley (died aged 11, buried 3rd Nov. 1822, at St James the Less, Winterbourne) Eliza, baptised 20th October 1822, in Chieveley The 1841 census records William (25) as an Agricultural Labourer, living in Lower End, North Heath, Chieveley, Berkshire, with his father Bemjamin (65), an Agricultural Labourer, his mother Elizabeth (50) and his sister Hannah (30) (surname recorded as Quine on ancestry) William’s mother Elizabeth died aged 64, in 1850. She was buried on the 14th April 1850, at St James the Less, Winterbourne. The 1851 census records Wiliam (36) as a Farm Labourer, living in North Heath, Winterbourne, with his father Benjamin (77), a Farm Labourer, his sister Hannah (39) and his nephew John (7) (John was the illegitimate son of William’s sister Eliza). William’s father Benjamin died aged 81. He was buried on the 29th October, 1857, at St Mary, Chieveley. The 1861 census records William (47) as a Pauper/Servant, living in Winterbourne, with his nephew John (17), a Wood Rake Maker (surname recorded as Rince on ancestry) In 1871 William (53), a Pauper, was living in North Heath, with his brother-in-law, John Young (51) (husband of his sister Eliza) his nephew Benjamin Young (12) and his niece, Martha Young (4). The 1881 census records William (70) as a Domestic Servant, living with William Mason (37) an Inn Keeper and his family, in Winterbourne. The 1891 census records William (74) as an imbecile, living in the Newbury Workhouse. He died aged 82 on the 5th May, 1898, in the Newbury Workhouse and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th May.
