Charles was baptised on the 19th June 1831, in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the son of James (a Labourer) and Mary (nee Masum) Dogwood of Wexcombe.  James Dogwood married Mary Masum in Great Bedwyn on the 18th December 1820.

James and Mary also had the following children baptised in Great Bedwyn, (surnames recorded as Dogwood, living in Wexcombe):

Elizabeth Hannah, 3rd March 1822

Emma, 23rd May 1824

Thomas, 20th April 1826

William, 15th June 1828

The family surname had changed from Dogwood to Doggett by 1841.

The 1841 census records Charles Doggett (10) living in Wexcombe, Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, with his father James (46), an Agricultural Labourer, his mother Mary (48), his sister Eliza (19) and his brother Thomas (15) an Agricultural Labouer.

Charles married in 1851

Groom: Charles Doggett, aged 20, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, Wexcombe

Bride: Jane Newman, aged 20, spinster, abode, East Grafton

Fathers: James Doggett and Henry Newman, both Labourers

Witnesses: William Doggett and Sarah Pearce

(Jane was baptised on the 24th June 1832, in Bedwyn Magna, Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry (a Labourer) and Hannah Newman (nee Bell) of East Grafton, Wiltshire. Henry and Hannah were married on the 21st July 1831 in Great Bedwyn)

Charles and Jane had the following children: (baptised at St Nicholas, East Grafton, (surnames recorded as Doggett, living in Wexcombe Marsh, dad a Labourer))

Eliza, 27th May 1853

James, 23rd March 1855 (died aged 49 in 1905, buried in the NRC on the 10th January)

Henry Edward, privately baptised 23rd May 1857 (died aged 3 months, buried 8th August in East Grafton)

Charles William, baptised (as William) 8th December 1858, (died aged 22, on the 28th January 1881, whilst serving a prison sentence in Reading, Berkshire, buried 31st January at London Road Cemetery, Reading)

and

Frederick Henry, born 1861, in Newbury (died aged 48 in 1909, buried in the NRC on the 19th August)

Albert Alfred, born 1864, in Newbury

Mary Jane, born 1866, in Newbury (died aged 3 years 11 months, buried in the NRC on the 19th March 1870, recoded on the burial register as Jane Dockett)

Tom George, born 1868, in Newbury (died aged 1 year 4 months, buried in the NRC on the 5th January 1870, mistakenly recorded as John George Doppett on the burial register)

Sidney Newman, born 1873, in Newbury

The 1861 census records Charles (29) a Brewer’s Labourer, Jane (29), Eliza (8), James (6) and Charles William (2), living at 5 Kimber’s Yard, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1871 Charles (39) a Brewer’s Labourer, Jane (39), James (16), a Groom, Charles (12), Frederick (9) and Albert (6), were living at 22 Shaw’s Lane, Newbury.

Charles (49) a Brewer’s Man, Jane (49), Frederick (19), a Labourer, Albert (16), a Labourer and Sidney (8) were living in West Mills, Newbury in 1881.

The 1891 census records Charles (59), a Maltster, Jane (59) a Needlewoman, Frederick (29), a Labourer and Sidney (18), a Labourer, living at 7 Dine’s Buildings, Newbury.

Charles was widowed in 1894. Jane died aged 62 on the 3rd April. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th April.

Charles died aged 66 on the 20th January 1898. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th January.
