DEATH OF MR. FREDERICK PENN
WHILE ON HOLIDAY IN DEVON
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Frederick Penn, of Priory-road, Newbury, which occurred suddenly while he was on holiday at South Milton, Devon. He was expecting to return home on Sunday, but on Saturday evening had a stroke, and died at 11.30 next morning without regaining consciousness. Mr. Penn, who was 80 years of age last February, had enjoyed fairly good health until a few months ago.
Born at Northampton, the son of Mr. Frederick Penn, a shoemaker, he was apprenticed at the age of 14 to book-binding, and although after completing some ten to 15 years at this trade, he returned to Northampton to manage his father's shop, book-binding remained a hobby of his all his life. His other interests included reading and gardening.
He came to Newbury in 1908 and opened a bootmaker's shop in the Market-place, later moving to larger premises opposite the Free Library, and six years ago the business was transferred to the present shop opposite the Post Office. After being joined in the business by his sons, Mr. Hubert Penn and Mr. Arnold Penn, Mr. Penn retained active interest in the concern right up to the end of last year.
The death of his wife in 1931. was a great grief to him. Mr. Penn was a Congregationalist all his life and was a most acceptable local preacher for over 50 years. He is survived by three sons.
In accordance with the deceased's wishes, the funeral yesterday (Wednesday) was of a quiet character, a service being held at the house, and the interment being in the grave of his wife at the Newtown-road Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. John Wilding, Congregational minister.

Floral tributes included the following: Nellie; Hubert, Grace, Howard and Max Arnold and Elsie; Eric and Madeline; there follows a long list of those presen and those who sent wreaths.
