Charles was born in 1814 in East Woodhay, Hampshire to Joseph & Rachel Rose. He was baptised there on 28 August 1814.

He married Maria Sims (b.1820 E.Stratton, Hampshire) on the 10 August 1839 in E.Stratton.

Charles’ whereabouts are not known in 1841 but his wife & daughter Eliza, aged 1, are living with his parents in East Woodhay.

 

(Eliza is also buried in NRC Ref: 2363 as Eliza Dalton)

 

In 1851, they are living as a family in Mulley’s or Nulley’s Yard, Bartholomew, Newbury. He is an agricultural labourer. They have two more children – Sarah & William, plus a lodger.

 

Again, his whereabouts & most of his family have not been found in 1861.

 

In 1871, Charles is a widower & a labourer is living with his sister Ann’s family, the Wherrells, at 18, West Field, Newbury. He is still with them in 1881 but they are now living at 8, Clare place, Newbury.

 

In 1891 Charles, now 81, is living with his daughter, Eliza Dalton, in Gladstone Cottages, Argyle Rd., Newbury. His occupation is hard to decipher but starts with “Parish”.

 

Charles dies on 10 November 1897 (Q4 Newbury 2c 142) & buried at NRC on 12 November 1897.

 

An announcement was printed in the Marlborough Times on 20 November 1897.
