Ann Salter (1809 – 1897)

 

Ann Hamblin was born circa 1809 in Basildon, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah. She was baptized on 15 February 1809 at St Bartholomew in Basildon.

 

She married William Hawes, a widower, on 8 March 1833 at St Frideswide in Frilsham. William died in January 1834 aged 60 and was buried on 31 January 1834 at St Frideswide.

 

Ann remarried on 13 May 1843 at St Bartholomew in Oare to Richard Hamblin, a shoemaker. Richard was born circa 1798 in Basildon or Chieveley (his birthplace was recorded as Basildon in 1851 census and then Chieveley in 1861).

 

In the 1851 census Robert and Ann with son Robert aged 4 were recorded living in Curridge, with Robert senior a pensioner. Ten years later in the 1861 census Robert and Ann were living by themselves in Chieveley with Robert again recorded as a pensioner.

 

Robert died in September 1864 aged 66 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin in Chieveley on 2 October 1864.

 

Ann remarried on 2 December 1865 at St Bartholomew in Oare to Thomas Salter, a widower living in Curridge. Thomas was born circa 1802 in Thatcham, son of William and Hannah.

 

In the 1871 census Thomas and Ann were recorded living in Curridge, with Thomas an agricultural labourer. Ten years later in the 1881 census Thomas and Ann were still living in Curridge with Thomas now recorded as a pauper.

 

Thomas died in November 1889 and was buried on 12 November 1889 at St Mary the Virgin in Chieveley.

 

Just over a year later in the 1891 census Ann was recorded as an inmate in Newbury Union Workhouse and her occupation was charwoman.

 

Ann died on 13 September 1897 at the Workhouse and was buried on 16 September 1897 at Newtown Road Cemetery. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 23 September and Reading Standard of 24 September as below.

 

SALTER – On the 13th inst., at the Union Workhouse, Newbury, Ann Salter, widow of Thomas Salter, aged 91 years.
