Henry Corderoy was born circa 1817 in Hampshire. In the 1851 and 1871 census his birth place is recorded as it looks like Stoke in Hampshire. It seems very likely that Henry was baptized on 3 November 1818 at Heckfield cum Mattingley in Hampshire, the son of Clement and Sarah.

He married Elizabeth Bell on 26 April 1840 in Newbury. In the 1841 census Henry and Elizabeth were recorded living in Thatcham with Henry an agricultural labourer. Elizabeth died 1 April 1845 aged 22 and was buried on 6 April at St Mary in Greenham.

In May 1846 Henry appeared before the Newbury magistrates and was found guilty of an offence against the games laws at Greenham. He was fined 18/6 including costs, or one month in prison with hard labour.

Two years later in June 1848 Henry aged 28 along with Samuel Moss aged 21 again appeared before the magistrates and was convicted for stealing a tame rabbit at Greenham, the property of Henry Badds. He was sentenced to three months hard labour.

Henry remarried in Q1 1850 in Newbury to Sarah Salter.

Sarah Salter was born circa 1824 in Newbury, the daughter of John and Mary, nee Dance, Salter. She was baptized on 28 March 1824 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Sarah was recorded with her parents and four siblings living in Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1841 census, her father John was an agricultural labourer, but Sarah did not have any occupation recorded. It appears Sarah had a daughter Caroline who was born in Newbury in Q4 1848.

In the 1851 census Henry and Sarah were living in Bradley Yard, St Mary Hill in Newbury with Sarah’s daughter Caroline aged 2 and their son Albert aged 6 months. Henry was a gas stoker. Caroline was baptized just weeks after the census on 25 May 1851 at St Nicolas in Newbury as the daughter of Henry and Sarah.

Henry and Sarah had 8 children in addition to Caroline, the eldest six born in Newbury and the two youngest in Basingstoke. They were Albert (1850), John (1852), George Henry (1854), Mary (1857), Sarah Maria (1859), Henry (1860), Harriet (1863) and Joseph Frederick (1865).

The second eldest son John was born circa December 1852 and baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury on 5 December 1853. Sadly, John died in February 1854 aged 14 months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 15 February 1854.

The third eldest son George was born circa November 1854. He died in May 1856 aged 18 months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 May 1856. On his birth he was recorded as George Henry but just George on his death.

In the 1861 census Henry and Sarah were living in Back Lane in Newbury with children Caroline, Albert, Mary, Sarah Maria and Henry. Henry was a bricklayer’s labourer.

The family moved to Basingstoke soon after the 1861 census as Harriet was born in the town in 1863 followed by Joseph Frederick in 1865. Also, son Henry died in Basingstoke in Q3 1863 aged 2 years.

Subsequently in the 1871 census Henry and Sarah were living in Turnpike Road in Kingsclere with children Caroline, Albert, Mary, Sarah Maria, Harriet and Joseph. Henry was a labourer at a gas works and Albert an agricultural labourer.

Ten years later in the 1881 census Henry and Sarah were living at 6 Princes Place in Newbury with children Sarah Maria, Harriet and Joseph. Henry was a labourer, daughters Sarah and Harriet were both domestic servants and Joseph a labourer.

By the time of the 1891 census Henry and Sarah were living at 5 Princes Place (from number 6 in 1881) with daughter Mary Minchinton and grand-daughter Maud Minchinton aged one. Henry was recorded as a general labourer.

Sarah died on 1 September 1896 aged 69 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 4 September 1896. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 3 September 1896 as below.

CORDEROY - Sep 1, at Princes Place, Cheap Street, Newbury, Sarah wife of Henry Corderoy aged 69 years.

Henry died just over a year later on 8 December 1897 aged 80 at Newbury Union Workhouse and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 December 1897. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 16 December 1897 as below.

CORDEROY – Dec. 8, Henry Corderoy, late of Princes Place, Newbury, aged 80 years.

An announcement also appeared in the Reading Standard dated 16 December 1897 as below.

CORDEROY – On the 8th inst., at the Union Workhouse, Newbury, Henry Corderoy, aged 80 years.

Henry and Sarah’s daughter Mary married Elias Lane in Newbury in 1884 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 September 1899, only a few years after her parents.
