Recorder's Notes | The J W equates to a Joseph Walker buried 25th of July 1896 in a private grave. However Joseph's wife was Martha Walker who was buried on the 16th of November 1878. It seems probable that Mrs Patterson recorded the letters H W instead of M W |

Joseph Walker
1815-1896
Joseph was born on the 30th March 1815, he was baptised on the 16th May 1815 at the Lower Meeting House Independent Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Sarah Walker (nee Poole) who were married in Reading, Berkshire in 1806.
Joseph’s father Joseph (a Woollen Weaver) was baptised in 1783 in Newbury, the son of Joseph and Sarah Walker (nee Fuse) who were married on the 14th December 1777 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
His mother Sarah was baptised in Reading Berkshire in 1787, the daughter of Richard and Rachel Poole (nee Whenmouth) who were married in 1786 in Reading.
Joseph’s siblings were:
William born 27th November 1808, baptised 13th January 1809
Samuel born 30th March, 13th January 1809 baptised 2nd May 1811
Sarah born 29th December 1817, baptised 17th February 1818
Rachel born 7th January, baptised 2nd March 1820
Hannah born 3rd December 1821, baptised 30th January 1822
Esther born 2nd July, baptised 31st August 1823
Mary born 30th March, baptised 30th June 1828
In 1815 Joseph (an infant) was recorded living in Jack of Newbury Yard, on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his parents Joseph (34) and Sarah (29), his brother William (7) and a John Poole (20) a Shoemaker (Joseph’s uncle).
Joseph was a Shoe and Boot Maker.
He married Martha Myhill on the 8th June 1839 at St George Camberwell Surrey.
They had the following children:
Martha born 1839 in Newington (possible death aged 9 in 1849 in Newbury)
Hannah 1842 in Lambeth
Joseph 1845 in Lambeth
Elizabeth 1849 in Newbury
Eliza Jane 1853 in Newbury
The 1841 census records Joseph (26), Martha (27) and their daughter Martha (19 months) living in Townsend Street, St George, Southwark.
By 1851 Joseph (36), Martha (36) and their children Hannah (8) and Joseph (5) were living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury.
The 1861 census records Joseph (46) as a Bootmaker employing 3 boys. He was living in Nursery Garden Cottage, Old Road, Newbury with Martha (46) and their children Hannah (18), Joseph (15), Elizabeth (11) and Eliza Jane (7).
In 1871 Joseph (56), Martha (56) and their children Hannah (28), Joseph (25), Elizabeth (21) and Eliza (17) were living at 103 Northbrook Street, Newbury.
Martha died aged 64 in 1878, she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th November.
In 1881 Joseph (66) was recorded as Formerly a Boot Maker, living alone in West Mills, Newbury
The 1891 census records him aged 76 living on his own means in Enborne Road, Newbury.
He died aged 81on the 21st July 1896 and was buried in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th July.
