Henry Hill

c1856-1896

Henry was a Plasterer. He was born in Poplar, Middlesex. (No confirmed birth or baptism found for Henry. He records his father as James Hill, a Ship Builder, when he marries in 1880).

In 1861,1871 and 1881 Henry (5), was recorded living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire, with his grandparents, James and Susannah Hill. In 1881 he was also recorded living with his wife Hannah in Eastbury, Berkshire (see details below).

(Hannah was born 1859, in Lambourn, Berkshire, the daughter of Charles and Mary Day (nee Gilbert) who were married on the 31^st December 1836, at St Michael and All Angels, Lambourn).

Hannah had an illegitimate son, William Charles Day, in 1877.

Henry and Hannah had the following children:

In 1881 Henry (24), a Plasterer, Hannah (22), Hannah’s son, William C. Day (3) and their daughter Edith Kate (6 months), were recorded living in Eastbury, Berkshire.

Hannah’s son William Charles Day died aged 5, in 1882. He was buried (as Charles William) on the 13^thAugust, at St James the Great, Eastbury.

The 1891 census records Henry (35), a Plasterer, Hannah (32) and their children, Edith (10), Albert (9), Frederick (7), William (5), Beatrice (3) and Edward (1), living in Percy Place, Newbury, Berkshire.

Henry died aged 40, in 1896, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th June.

Hannah after Henry ‘s death:

Hannah remarried in 1897 (marriage registered in the December quarter in Newbury). Her 2^nd husband was Charles Pike.

They had the following children:

Charles Alexander Pyke, born 1899 (died aged 2 months, on the 12^th May, buried in the NRC on the 15^th May).

Edith May Pyke, born 1900

Evelyn Annie Pyke, born 1902

Arthur James Pyke, born 1904

The 1901 census records Charles Pike (42), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Hannah (42), Frederick Hill (17), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Ellen Hill (13), Edward Hill (11), Henry Hill (9), Alice Hill (7), Frank Hill (5) and May Pike (10 months), living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury.

In 1911 Charles Pike (52), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Hannah (52), Frederick Hill (27), a Plasterer, Henry John (19), a Builder’s Labourer, Sidney Frank (15), a Messenger Boy, Edith Pike (10), Evelyn Annie Pike (8) and Arthur James Pike (6) were again recorded living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace.

Charles Pike died aged 75, on the 18^th April 1934, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st April, with his parents Charles (c1825-1900) and Mary (c1834-1915)

The 1939 Register records Hannah living at 16, Southdown Road, Thatcham, Berkshire, with her married son Arthur and his family.

Hannah Pike died aged 81 on the 16^th February 1941. She was buried on the 19^th February, in Shaw Cemetery, Newbury.

Henry Hill (1856 — 1896)

Henry was born circa 1856 in London, possibly in Poplar. He was recorded with his grandparents James and Susannah Hill in The City in Newbury in the 1861 census, James was recorded as an agricultural labourer. Ten years later in the 1871 census Henry was still living with his grandparents in The City, both Henry and James were recorded as labourers and Susannah as "laundry". Henry married Hannah Day in 1880 in Hungerford district, probably in Lambourn. Hannah was born 19 March 1859 in Eastbury near Lambourn, the daughter of Charles and Mary, nee Gilbert, Day. She was recorded with her parents and siblings in Eastbury in the 1861 census and in Lambourn in the 1871 census.

Henry was recorded twice in the 1881 census. He was listed with his grandparents James and Susannah in The City in Newbury, recorded as married and born in London. He was also recorded with his wife Hannah in Lambourn along with children William aged 3 and Edith aged 6 months and born in Poplar in London. Henry was recorded as a plasterer on both occasions.
In the 1891 census Henry and Hannah were living at Percy Place, Bartholomew Street in Newbury with children Edith aged 10, Albert aged 9, Frederick aged 7, William aged 5, Beatrice aged 3 and Edward aged 1. Henry was recorded as a plasterer.
Henry died 11 June 1896 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 16 June. An announcement appeared in the Faringdon Advertiser and Vale of the White Horse Gazette dated 20 June 1896 which read as below.
HILL — On the 11 thinst., at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury, Henry Hill, aged 40. Hannah then remarried in 1897 in Newbury to Charles Pike. In the 1901 census Hannah and Charles were living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace with six of Hannah's children with Henry and a daughter of their own May aged 10 months. Charles was recorded as' bricklayers labourer. Hannah and Charles and various children were still living at 4 Shrewsbury Terrace in the 1911 census.

Hannah died 16 February 1941 while living at 16 Southdown Road in Newbury and was buried at Shaw Cemetery on 19 February 1941.
