Mary Ann Griffiths
c1828-1896
Mary Ann, her parents, siblings and early life:
Mary Ann was born in Newbury Berkshire she was baptised 6th April 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of William and Mary Ann Lipscomb(e) (nee Crumpton) who were married on the 18th July 1807 in Henley on Thames.
Mary Ann’s father was a Chair Maker, born c1788 in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Her mother was born c1784 in Henley on Thames.
Other known children of William and Mary were:
Rebecca baptised 10th July 1808 Beaconsfield Buckinghamshire
John baptised 25th December 1814 St Mary Marlborough
Elizabeth baptised 14th June 1815 St Mary the Virgin Marlborough (father recorded as a Chair Maker)
In 1841 Mary Ann Lipscomb (14) (recorded on ancestry as Mariann) was living with her parents William (55) and Mary (55) in Bartholomew Street, Newbury
The 1851 census records Mary Ann’s parents William and Mary Ann (both aged 64) living at White Hall Yard, Newbury also recorded in the household were their grandchildren William Lipscombe (6) and Rebecca Lipscombe (8). Mary Ann (23) was working as a House Maid for the Rector of Enborne, Charles A Johnson (30) at Enborne Rectory.
Mary’s mother Mary (76) was recorded in the 1861 census as a widow living in St Mary’s Almshouses, Cheap Street, Newbury, her granddaughter Elizabeth Green (11) was recorded living with her.
Mary’s mother died aged 78 in 1862, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th December.
Mary Ann:
Mary Ann married William Griffiths in 1858. (William was a widower, 1st wife Mary Powers, married 17/10/1824, twelve children, widowed in 1856, Mary buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd January 1857)
William and Mary Ann had the following three children:
Frederick William c1859, Ann Matilda c1861 and Edwin 1862
In 1861 Mary Ann (35) was living in the Old Cattle Market, Newbury with William (56), a Master Coach Smith, her stepsons, Caleb (19), Paul (17), Samuel (10), her son Frederick William (2) and her daughter Ann Matilda aged 3 months.
William (68), Mary Ann (44), Frederick William (12), Ann Matilda (10) and Edwin (8) were still living in the Old Cattle Market in 1871. William died aged 68 later that year. He was laid to rest (as William Edward Griffiths) in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th November.
In 1881 Mary Ann (50) and her son Edwin (19) were living at 12 Union Court, Newbury. Mary was working as a School Mistress.
The 1891 census records Mary Ann (64) living at 6 Barlow’s Building, Greenham with her married son Edwin (28) and daughter-in-law Louisa (26) (surname recorded as Griffiens on ancestry).
Mary Ann died aged 68 on the 8th February 1896, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th February.
