Summary of Henry Dell
No birth or baptism records have been found for Henry but he was born c1826.
In 1841 Henry was living in Mary Hill Street, St Nicholas, Newbury with his father George Dell (45, Shoemaker); sister Eliza, 20; brother Edwin,14. (It’s possible Edwin was the father of Edwin Dell 7595).
In 1845 (Q2 Newbury 6 313) he married Martha Chamberlaine.
1851 saw them living at Northbrook Street & Chapel Yard. Henry is a Shoemaker Journeyman, aged 24 & Martha is 25. They have 3 children: George 5, Ellen 3 & Elizabeth1.
1858: Martha died, aged 33, on 8 January 1858 (Q1 1858 Newbury 2c 155) from Consumption that she had had for 3 years & Anascara (Edema) for 6 months. Henry was present & they were living in Jack of Newbury Street,
In October 1858, Henry married Jane Gibbs (Q3 Newbury 2c 333).
1861 census sees them living in Bath Road, Speen. Henry, 34, is a Shoemaker & his birth is recorded as Woodhay rather than Newbury in all other census records. Jane is 23.
Children by Martha: George is now 15 & a House painter & Elizabeth, 10, Scholar. & William, 7, Scholar.
Jane has had 2 children of her own: Mary Jane, 1, & Thomas, 2 months.
In 1871 Henry is 44 & a Master Shoemaker. Jane is 42. William is now 19 & a Chemist’s Porter & Jane had had 2 more children: Ann, 7, Scholar & Esther, 4. They are living in Jack Street, Newbury.
1881 sees Henry, 53, & Jane, 42, still at Jack Street but all the children have gone.
By the 1891 census they have moved to 3, Exchange Buildings, Newbury. The ages are 67 & 56 but these are probably incorrect.
Henry died on 25 October 1895, aged 69, from Cirrhosis of the Liver at Cleveland Place, Newbury. Daughter Esther (now Green) was present. Henry was buried at NRC in unconsecrated ground on 29 October 1895.
Jane remarried a year later – see Jane Woodward 6994.
During Henry’s life he was present at the death of several of his children:
Henry Dell 8171
Ellen Dell 8294
Mary Jane Dell 9634
Thomas Dell 9635
All were buried in unconsecrated ground in NRC and probably were non-conformists
