THE LATE MR. CHARLES SAUNDERS —Although Mr. Charles Saunders had for some time lived in retirement at Hillcot, Speen, he was a thorough Newburian, and his death on Saturday has aroused sincere regret among a large circle of friends and acquaintances, especially the elder generation of townsmen to whom he was better known. Mr. Saunders was a tailor by trade, and for a time conducted the "Coopers' Arms" in Bartholomew-street, but like some of our friends across the water, he made his little pile out of pork, his shop on the Bridge, with which he was connected thirty-five years, being a well known establishment. He was among the oldest Oddfellows of the town, being one of the original members of the Order. He was a member of the Bowling Green Club, and a liberal subscriber to church institutions. His health had been failing for some years, but he ; only kept his bed for a fortnight, suppressed gout being the immediate cause of death. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the body being conveyed from Hillcot, Speen, to St. Nicholas Church, where the service was read by the Rev. F. A. Hill. The mourners were : —Mrs. Saunders (the widow), Mrs. Stillman, Mr. Biddis, Mr. Kendall, Mr. S. Knight, Lizzy, Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Westall, Mr. Jacobs, Jun., Mr. G. Griffin, Mr. Johnson; next came the members of the Jack of Newbury Lodge of Oddfellows. At the cemetery the Rev. R. May, curate of Speen, conducted the service at the grave-side. The coffin was of polished oak with massive brass fittings, and the plate on the coffin bore the inscription: CHARLES SAUNDERS Died Sept. 8th,1894. Aged 73 years. Wreaths were sent from …(list). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. H. S. Hanington. Newbury Weekly News and General Advertiser - Thursday 13 September 1894 |
