Martha Stanford
Martha Stanford (1823 – 1894)
Martha Elliott was baptised 22 April 1823 at St Mary the Virgin in Aldermaston. Her parents were Stephen and Margaret, nee Steptoe, Elliott. She was probably a twin as her sister Elizabeth Ann was baptized on the same date.
In the 1851 census Martha was recorded living at 117 Regent Street in Westminster and working as a servant.
Martha married George Rice Stanford on 5 November 1853 at St Mary the Virgin in Chieveley. George was born circa 1833 in Langley in Buckinghamshire.
George and Martha were living at Tower Hill in Kingsclere in the 1861 census with four children, George aged 7, Margaret aged 5, Harriet aged 4 & Emily aged 3. George was recorded as a master drillman and horse clipper.
Ten years later George and Martha were living at The Harrow in West Shefford in the 1871 census with three children, George aged 17, Harriet aged 14 & Samuel aged 8. George was recorded as a machinist and retailer of beer and tobacco.
George and Martha were living at Hoe Benham near Welford with grandson Stephen Stanford aged nine in the 1881 census. George was recorded as a drill proprietor.
George died April 1889 and was buried 26 April 1889 at St Gregory in Welford.
Martha was recorded living at Snelsmore Common in the 1891 census along with her brother William Elliott. William was recorded as living on his own means while Martha was recorded as a housekeeper.
Martha died 27 May 1894 at Newbury and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 June 1894. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 31 May 1894 which read:-
“STANFORD – May 27, at Newbury, Martha widow of the late George Stanford, and third surviving daughter of Stephen Elliott of Newbury.”
Martha’s parents were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, her father Stephen on 7 July 1860 and mother Margaret on 21 January 1864. In addition, three of her siblings were also buried at Newtown Road, William Elliott on 4 November 1892, Elizabeth Ann Elliott on 1 June 1911 and Margaret Elliott on 9 November 1911.
